Anyone else hates playing the french defense

It's very heartening to read about how players hate facing the French. After much experimenting in my early chess days (including the Pirc, Caro-Kann and Alekhine), I settled on the Sicilian, first the Dragon and then the Scheveningen. This year I switched to the French and so far have scored +2-0=2. The draws were with players rated well above me.

The French is indeed a tough nut to crack. My impression from my small sample of 4 games is that White tends to press too hard. Black's position looks like it should be easily crushed, but in reality that cramped position has enormous potential energy. If you push a spring down too hard, it's going to hurt you when it rebounds. Same with the French. White needs to approach the position with patience and finesse.

I don't play the Winawer and don't know if the above comments apply to it.

When it comes to the French, I'm not racist.  I'll mate with either color!!!!  (Ba-da-bum!)

Hi, i´ve been playing chess for almost 3 years, i´ve seen many openings but one that i specially hate is the french defense. I don´t know why, but everyone seems to be ok with that. Do anyone else hates playing the french defense and if so, do you have some funny stories?

I am a 1750 USCF otb player. I always play e4 and hope that my opponent plays e5 or c5, which I like to play against. But I absolutely hate seeing the French. There are not even any gambit lines in those. You can play a Smith-Morra, a Danish, and Scotch gambits. But no acceptable gambits in French. A few weeks ago in a tournament I was doing subpar and wanted a brilliancy as white in my last round. I played e4 hoping that my opponent would let me play the Double Danish. But the French appeared, so I took a back route into an inferior version of the Blackmar-Deimer, which would probably be rated at -1 by Stockfish. My young opponent accepted, but was forced to think more than he wanted to in the opening. I developed an attack and pulled off an exchange sack! So I won the last game, but I noticed that my opponent could have declined and kept his extra pawn safely. So I didn't submit it to the Virginia Chess Federation, as I would have liked. But at least I won the last game. I may use Auk's suggestion in the future, as that seems better than my bad BDG.

Have any thoughts on this position? I would like to use it as the Classical French (universally accepted as the only variation to try for an advantage) is too theoretical and I am uncomfortable in that position.

We'll soon see whether the Belgians will hate playing the French.

As white, you can play the Korchnoi gambit. I have a lot of fun with it, and white has a 60% win rate with it.

On move 7, black doesn't have to play Qb6, but Qb6 is a common move.

I hate playing against it... & that’s why I started playing it... and I still hate to face it

Honestly I used to play French defense then I switched to alekhine defense. I will still play unless I play someone I knew and alternate to that line. I only hate it because When I play black certain opponents will play exchange variation. I usually never post on forums in my entire chess life, but this got my attention.

The French is my primary response to 1.e4. I often want to give it up. In the World Open (played on ICC at the end of July), I played the French three times in nine game. I lost all of these games, two in 20 moves or less. Today, in the CCA August Open, I played the French three times, winning all three. One long game was won on time in a dead lost position. The other two were longer, and I prevailed in minor piece endgames where I had a slight advantage and my young opponents worsened their own position.

Wow... coming back two years later, I realize how trash my openings were back then

I absolutely hate playing against the french, therefore I respond with the KIA.

Staples 13 was a God

Actually I just realized I played him once

The French Defense is one that has latent strengths. In most variations White plays e5 at some point and gains space. Black's light-squared bishop seems hopeless; then, out of nowhere, Black starts chipping away at White's center, slow and methodically. When that crumbles, White is usually lost.

Fianchettoing the king's bishop and castling is what everybody does when they don't know what to do or don't care to learn some main lines. happy.png It's something one can usually do with impunity and worry about what happens later. The King's Indian Defense and the Modern Defense are the type of defenses one can adopt and not worry about whether White plays 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4 or 1.Nf3 or whatever.
