Anyone else who can't learn their ABCs?

I picked up on algebraic notation and felt comfortable with it just about as fast as I first saw it, way back when, and never had any problems with it.

Except for one thing-- after all this time, when I'm looking from Black's side I still have to think twice about which is the e-file and which is the f-file.  For the life of me, I just never manage to automatically peg those two files when I'm looking across the board from Black's side. Yell  It's not that I don't get it right, but there's often that little mental hesitation, one that never crops up for me in any other situation of algebraic notation.

Anyone else have any quirks like this?  Or any words of encouragement, like maybe it'll eventually become second nature to me in, oh, another 20 or 30 years?  It sure hasn't in the first 30 years! Cool

If you can get used to the King being on the left as Black,

Interesting-- I never thought of having the King on the left as not normal, or something that needed getting used to, since half the games I've ever played have been from that position.  I don't think it's really the right-to-left alphabet itself that's the problem for me, just those two damn files!

Really? The "e" is the King file, and "f" is the King Bishop file. You already know which piece is the King ....

"The "e" is the King file, and "f" is the King Bishop file."

Yes, thanks, I figured that out a few decades ago. Tongue out

My point was not that I can't figure out the notation, but that, for whatever reason, those two files are not instantaneously placed in my mind like the other files are.  If I'm reading an algebraic line of several moves with no board or diagram to view, I can zip right along envisioning the board and moves from either side of the board.  But when I'm viewing in my mind from Black's perspective and hit those two files, there's a slight pause-- the square involved doesn't immediately light up on my mental board the way all the others do, even after all these years.  That's all I'm saying.

Actually, there are a couple little gems in that thread, mixed in amongst all the usual snarky humor.  Thanks for the link, artfizz!

Sarcasm and descriptive notation aside, I just never found difficulty remembering (instantaneously) that the e was the king file, and f was ... not. Of course, now that I reflect on it, g and h sometimes merged into one rather fuzzy wide strip ....

I have to think about the a file being on the left when playing black.  I attribute this to 1.  Growing up with classic notation (KB-N4) 2.  Age  and/or 3.  An Indiana anti-alphabet gene or non-conformist attitude.
