Are any of you OBS/computer nerds?

I recently got a new laptop... an HP. I'm trying to record [chess] videos with it.

The thing is, the recording is perfect and crisp when it's just my webcam. But once I make moves on Chess.com, the whole thing lags, both my webcam and window capture.

I'm hoping it's just some OBS settings I'm missing, but it might be my computer's specs sad.png

sounds like a decent idea to just lighten the load by going into task manager and closing whatever background programs you're not using while recording. aside from that I think it'd be nice to know what specs your laptop has.

Up to 2.8 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 64GB eMMC Storage... I have no idea what any of it means 🤠

GHz is your processor speed, the higher the number, the faster the processor.  8gb RAM is like our short term memory, used for quick calculations, same as the processor again, a higher number is better.  64GB is your internal storage, like a filing cabinet on your PC.  I used to use a program called Fraps, it's memory intensive so 8gb RAM might be too low.  Try searching for recording software, once you find one that you like you could always post here again and ask if it's good to use.

Hi Daniel,

Finally switched to windows! I'm not an expert, but here is my recommendation, If you get a graphics card (if you don't already have one), then it should be able to handle the video recording better, as your core-processing-unit can be used for other processes, and the graphics card is better at multi-tasking.

All best

Hey Daniel, the integrated graphics card is typically a big limiter for this kind of work. Most don't handle video work very well. One note is that if you are recording using chess.com/analysis, you may want to turn off or turn down depth, etc. on Stockfish as that uses a lot of resources.

You can also consider going into OBS and reducing the aspect ratio and bit rate and FPS. Try something like 1280x720, bitrate 2500, and FPS 24.

Also, keep an eye on the stats to see if you are experiencing missing frames due to either rendering lag or encoding lag.

@SamCopeland, thanks so much for the input, it actually helped a lot! (more than these "easy fix" YT videos lol). I think the FPS was problematic (it was at 60 something I think).

It's still a little laggy on the chessboard, but the webcam is crisp, and it's a good start. I even won the 3|0 blitz game on my test recording! happy.png

Yeah, you are gonna want a better computer if you want to make videos, 64 storage is nowhere near enough to store videos.

64gb I mean

The kind of computer you have is the kind people use for like work. Word documents and stuff like that, not resource heavy recording.

@M1m1c15 gotchu, I probably have a solid start (especially if a graphics card can help), and if I can make halfway decent videos, I can save for a better computer 👍

Not the greatest, but it's MUCH better than where I was, so I'm happy 😁

You need to upgrade your graphic card probably MSI RTX 3080 Suprim X will work if your CPU support it.

Good stuff, Daniel happy.png Two other small tips would be to possibly try another browser. Chrome can be heavy if you are using that. You can also make sure to turn off animations in setting to make that as fast as possible.
