That's an extreme sport, like skateboarding or snowboarding

Playing chess at top level doesn't make them athletes, but it's not a big secret that being in a good physical shape can benefit their mental performance.

Or generally esports players? ♟️ at a professional level*
Chess players can certainly be athletic, if they lead an athletic lifestyle outside of chess (wholly recommended!). But chess itself is not an athletic activity.
Professional chess players are professional board-game players.

Yes. Their life is a board game...

chess also attracts competitive people (including athletes) & seekers of truth:
perpetuating negative stereotypes about the average chess player's physical condition is ridiculous;
one of the best chess players i know is a 230-lb. construction worker (he's in the elite league right now)... you'd never think he was a chess player unless you had no prejudices on the matter.

They can be. I play golf, swim, and hike, which are athletic. So I am a chess player who is also an athlete. But a chess player who doesn't compete in athletics isn't an athlete.

seirawan was a boxer.
really? boxers look scary but he is cute, he laughs and smiles.. lovely

I think they can be considered athletes. Studies show that people who play intense chess matches tend to lose a lot of energy and calories during the match as their brain is as focused and needs as much glucose as required by any other runner or swimmer in a competition.
Wouldn't the energy used from playing chess be more of a mental exertion rather than a physical one?
Because if it is, then someone staring at art, which is a mental pursuit, would be an athlete.

Here we go again.
