Is internet chess an addiction?...and at what point?

wanmokewan

It becomes an addiction when you start to neglect basic things(eating, showering, bathroom) to play.

universityofpawns

So when I start to smell bad that is when?....lol.

wanmokewan

Pretty much.

For me its something to do.

schrodingerforluv

it's just that we keep hoping the website will go back to where you could converse with friends without being blocked by whackos, but those days are definately gone.

Slow_pawn

I think online chess is a healthy pastime, but I think the studying and determination to improve can be unhealthy if you don`t have limits.

PS. While I`m thinking about it, anyone know what`s up with my apostrophe and question mark keys É

schrodingerforluv

did you spill tea on your keyboard ?

schrodingerforluv

but online chess is undoubtedly an addiction for most slowmo.

chesster3145

Lol @Slow_pawn. I have the same problem.

slowpawn....I fix laptops and salvage them for parts....did you spill coffee or liquid near those keys??? Did you replace a keyboard with a non-U.S. keyboard??? Maybe try cap full 60-70-% rubbing alcohol in them and blowing out with cheap can of compressed air from "Wally World"....I also recommend blowing out your fan on PC or laptop with air every 6 months or so....of all the broken laptops I salvage, half the broken ones have a clogged fan!

Thanks, university of pawns. The keyboard issues on my laptop go away when I reboot and come back once in a while, so I don't think I spilled anything. I wondered if I somehow toggled those accents on by accidentally hitting alt+shift or something like that. This laptop, HP pavilion, is kind of buggy overall though. I need to replace the cmos battery (clock always falls behind on standby whether I set it manually or internet time), and I'm sure you're right about the fan because it gets pretty hot after long a long session. I think the cmos battery is under the fan so I'll get a good look at it when I replace that. A few software bugs as well since I put windows 10 on it last year. It should run well, it's only 3 and a half years old and has the right specifications, but I imagine hardware issues contribute to that. Thanks for responding and advice, I really appreciate it.

Yes, and we will all end like being Fischer - except from the chess skills.

How can you neglect the bathroom? It's going to happen one way or another surprise.png

I agree with the idea though. It's an addiction when you take away time from important basic things to give to chess. I think better examples are relationships and health (like eating and sleeping).

universityofpawns

Sometimes I play until my head hurts or 3AM, that can't be good either....but it definitely a respite from the rest of reality....

LM_player
Yep. We're all addicted to chess.
ThePEPSIChallenge

I've noticed taking maybe 4 days away any chess advantage to seeing more positions, as well wins.

I'll add never will I read anything about chess moves, nor tactics.. I like my own growth to this great game.
