Is absolute crap! Especially in chess.com sponsered tournaments.

If it's a tournament, especially one sponsered by chess.com, there should be no auto vacations allowed!

I know, I have two users who are on vacation since the first move of a tournament. It's very selfish, I don't mind vacation time but don't join a tournament if you can be there when it starts.

Yeah I know, right.  Premium members get automatic vacation when they (we) are about to lose on time.  I've been saved from a couple losses when I irresposibly forgot to make my move within the time allotted...

It's impossible to know when a tournament will start (unless it is an official one).

It's impossible to know how long a tournament will last.

Tournaments and planning-in-advance are mutually exclusive.

Even if vacation is excluded, there are so many other factors (time per move, group size, number of rounds, player speed, whether games are concurrent, ...) that have a direct impact on how long a tourney will last.

What's more: even if you're aware of the key factors affecting likely longevity of a tournament, it's hard work tracking down a tournament that meets your requirements in the absence of more powerful search features (e.g. tournament-filter--selection-wizard).

It wasn't hard to know. It started on 1st of July.

I wouldn't have made the point if they couldn't have known when it was starting...

Perhaps they didn't know when they joined that they were going to be unavailable when the tournament started. There can be a substantial delay between signing up and a tournament starting (even when the start date is known).

In any case, since a tournament can run for months (or even years): I don't grasp the significant difference between taking allowed vacation at the start of a tournament compared with taking it later on in the tournament.
