So you guys still feel like you're below average then? Saying that 1850 is WAY above average, but you said that your 2182 rating still feels like a below average chess player?
Average chess rating?
sigh - time to untrack
Good, go untrack this thread whatever you want. You're not helping me anyway.
So you guys are saying that you feel like a bad chess player even at 2165?
[people say yes]

Feeling like your play is bad has nothing to do with where the average is. Relatively bad can be relative to anything. Often I think it's relative to players near your level and what you know relative to how you perform... perhaps particularly because hindsight is 20/20! It's easy to look at a game and see room for improvement. At the same time, ideas you've known for years (even if they're advanced and took you a long time to acquire) become taken for granted.
Even exceptionally strong players have felt their play is bad. It's a common feeling in chess heh.

Thank you very much for replying! I know that I can keep improving my skills as always.
Does anybody know what is the average Elo rating in chess? I heard that some people said that 2200 is the average rating in chess, which sadly makes me below average it seems, since my rating is only 1850, and I don't like to be called a bad chess player. People have been making fun of my chess skills for not being the best player ever.
One thing nobody pointed out here is that your 1850 rating here is just your rating for correspondence type online play here on chess.com.
It is really not very comparable to other ratings, like USCF or Fide over the board ratings. Since so many people use computer engines for assistance in slow correspondence play, it is considered the least reliable rating on chess.com and is relatively meaningless in comparison to an over the board rating.
If you don't want to be considered a bad chess player, you should get an over the board rating.
//The quickest way to shut up someone who calls you a bad chess player is to offer to play them.
If the average Elo rating is somewhere between 1200-1300, then I don't know why people have been calling me a bad player for having a rating of 1850, aka below 2200.
If 1850 is correct, then the description "bad" is absurd.
Anything over 1600 is real good. PERIOD.
Yeah [x1] rating is real good. Until you're [x1] rating of course, then you realize the only people you can manage to beat are idiots who don't know anything, and the really good players are rated [x2].
Until you're rated [x2].
etc.
I am nearly 1600 and it is hard to believe this is considered above average. I still feel like a pretty lame chess player a lot of the time.
I'm 2165, and I feel like a pooch, too.
Great. Not sure I will ever even get to 2165. So I guess I am doomed to a life of feeling inadequate in chess.
Yeah I think chess is definitely one of those things where 'the more you know the more you realise you don't know'.
I've definitely found that the better I get the worse I think my chess is :P

Yep definitely. Problem is also that when you think you're getting better your mistakes are getting more frustrating because you weren't supposed to be making those anymore..right? Wrong.
Average rating is low because few people have any serious interest in chess. Counting anyone that knows the rules the average rating is going to be 1000-1200ish.
Average rating of club players that do have a more serious interest in chess is going to be a lot higher. I see 1300 being mentioned but I find that hard to believe. Would estimate that to atleast 1600 but I could be entirely wrong. Also depends if you're going to count kids etc.
Your online correspondence chess rating here means nothing. See 1800's in online chess make mistakes 1400's don't make in blitz so yeah..

I actually agree with you. Of course that having just a 1600 Elo rating can hardly beat a chess master, but having at least 1600 can be really good when played Chess casually.

I just went up to 2182 a few seconds ago... so perhaps I'm not QUITE as bad as I used to be.
