I find that hard to believe given that you are 1700 online and online is about 400 more than OTB

I'm a bit older than 12, my USCF is about 900. But I've only been playing seriously and studying for about a year.

Well, its been proven that kids actually pick up the game a lot faster then adults. It is a lot easier and more chance of excelling if you learn as a young kid. Most GMs learned before age ten. Kids learn chess faster and get good way faster then most adults learning for the first time would.

There's exceptions to that. Not everyone's online rating has to be 300-400 points higher than their OTB rating. People online could be playing distracted or just not trying as much because they don't care about their online rating. There are less distractions OTB and he might be putting in more effort, which could be the reason his online rating is lower than his OTB rating
