I'm new to this website and I haven't played the game in 44 years!!!! This website looks great. Here's a few things I'd like to find out. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated? Any suggestions how to get back into the game? Lessons? Tactics? Lots of playing? Books? What length games should I start off with? We had a few tournaments a long time ago, and I did okay in them. No trophies but I won more than I lost. Is the ranking system here pretty good for matching players of similar abilities? How much above and below my ranking should I put for my playing other players? Thanks for your help.

Do tactic trainers 5 times a day (as a basic member) and one lesson (also because it's free) and 3 live tournaments (free member again) and join as much groups and teams as you can. Play in team matches, and just do everything you can in this website.

And don't forget to read my blog! Lol just kidding.

Most important advice is to enjoy your games

If you keep the rating within 100 points, you'll ride or fall to the right level in short order. Do the tactics as stated, but just get some games in! I was shocked how much ring rust I had after not playing actively for 15 years.

Live tournaments are unlimited on v3. I have to ask the op, are you on the new version (V3) or the old version (V2)?

I'm pretty sure I have volume 3.  Are some tournaments for beginners/ low intermediates? Are there tournaments every day?

I suggest taking up the Bg5 Najdorf as White and the Botvinnik Semi-Slav as Black to ease you back into chess.

My real advice?  OBLITERATE YOUR ENEMIES AND SHOW NO MERCY!!!

Good luck! Just remember the Mad Queen variation has become mainstream nowadays.  Wink

You're probably past the beginner courses, but the intermediate and advanced courses here will probably work as a good review.  The courses are concise and well written.  Enjoy!

id recommend using the search tab in groups and teams , this search can be narrowed to things you like and that need not be chess related lol chess.com has over 10000 teams ,

in these groups if active you can then get to tap into their knowledge so say you like the ruy lopez there are groups for that or any other opening you like

in the past i did this joining a team that favoured black pieces , as i was losing as black alot this worked well and what i learned has made me happy to use the black pieces and go for the win

Just play and have fun. That's what the game is all about. You'll win some and you'll lose some no matter how good or bad you are, so don't stress over it too much.

Some tournaments are for people with more or less the same rating, the ones that say "open" are open for all ratings. Tournaments are refreshed maybe every hour or so (I do not know much about that), you will always find tournaments available to join.

Quit immediately and start playing Bridge.

There are lots of tournaments every day, and many of them are rating based. Love it!

5 - Read the famous phrases below and think about that:

Chess is not relaxing ; it's stressful even if you win. Jennifer Shahade

Chess is not for the faint-hearted; it absorbs a person entirely. To get to the bottom of this game, he has to give himself up into slavery. Chess is difficult, it demands work, serious reflection and zealous research. Wilhelm Steinitz

I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art – and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position. – Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

How many chess addicts does it take to change a light-bulb? Answer: they won't change it, they will play blindfold. MarcoBR444.

6 - Be careful on what you say. These days things are difficult.

7 - I think chess is all about trolling your opponent.

See the research below and think about that.

8 - If the pawns are warriors, they are male, isn't it?

Then , what you think about MEN being PROMOTED to become WOMEN (PAWNS TO QUEENS)?

Check out YouTuber's like ChessNetwork <<< Excellent for all levels.

Be prepared to lose a lot of games and go low in rating, but don't be embarrassed and keep playing, and eventually you'll recover and see rapid progress, because of your past experience. Some of it is just rhythm.
