or you know, make them play with player in equal skill and only have a big gap if both agree to, so no balancing is required because they agree to play like that, like how it always has been lmao

To give more challenge to better players, one option should be to allow the better player (or both) to be bound to mate the opponent as quickly as possible, if mate is possible within x moves. Meaning if a mate is possible within 3 moves, then if the winning player goofs off and takes 8 moves to do it, toggling this option would result in a draw (or loss!) if the better player doesn't see the 3 moves mate.
Another option would be to require the better player to win within x moves after getting a piece ahead. Or perhaps two pawns.
This would give more hope to weaker players.
Of course, adding the doubling cube to chess would get weaker players to go ahead and resign instead of dragging out the game hoping for a miracle / blunder.
