Beginner looking to improve

I got chess openings by eric schiller and Grandemaster Chess Move by Move by John Nunn.

chessmaster 6000 is really good you can create players who test your weaknesses and play tournament there are puzzles and there is JOSH WATZKINS (sp) there are a bunch of games that he talks you through based on your skill level he explains it diffrently more in depth for advanced and basic for beginers snd he is easy to listen to and understand. |

You can check out my amazon.com listmania list. It has some titles you shouldn't miss out on. Let me know what you think.
just cut and paste the url and off you go

Don't bother buying any books yet, they'll only confuse you.
Go out and get a copy of chessmaster 10th edition and go through all of josh waitzkin's tutorials. This is the perfect base to build all your knowledge on.
There's no point in buying tactics drill books if you have no idea what a "pin" or a "skewer" is yet. And learning opening variations at your level is about as useless as it gets.

There is.
Chess can be studied for a lifetime and you can still be crap at it. This is one of the reasons I love it so much!
Really though, go buy chessmaster 10th edition, it WILL improve your game and serve as a base for all later improvement. Chessmaster 11th edition comes out in october but I cant tell you whether it will be any better than 10th.
Do Josh waitzkins academy tutorials and you'll be able to beat all of your friends. If you want to improve more after that come back here!

I agree with you more or less. I bought several chess books before I bought Chessmaster 10 and Chessmentor. Now they are collecting dust on a shelf. I find it much easier to work through chess problems and visualize ideas using a piece of software where I can actually see the pieces moving and then try out the ideas against a the (heavily handicapped) computer. It was a huge pain in the ass to read a long list of moves and then follow them using a little travel chess set.
However, if I didn't already have Chessmaster 10, I'd just wait a month and get Chessmaster 11 (Grandmaster Edition).

I've got one tip for ANY chessplayer, myself included. Let us take into consideration that a Master Class player is of PROFESSIONAL caliber. Like any other professional craft, we cannot expect to just become this level because we want it and we spend our leisure time doing it. I am still an ametuer hack because I have not taken to a serious study of chess and paid my dues in the WORK category of the success formula. You wouldn't expect to be a doctor just because you watch ER and read some medical books. So WHY do we expect great feats out of our chess development without adequate dedication in the field. We are oft fooled by this 'game' into a false sense of grandeur. When I, and any other chess player, puts in the grunt work of book study, play, and constant personal evaluation and professional assistance, we WILL get better. Let us too remember that even the Grandmasters have coaches!! If you are looking to get to Master Class, then you share the same goal as myself. Perhaps we could take this journey together and assist each other by motivating each other and sharing any successful methods we come across. Shoot me a message on this server if this sounds like a good idea to you.

That certainly works, but there's nothing wrong with using books to help you impove, you will need them later on for sure. I'm just saying that before you go buying a book on this tactic or that opening its a good idea to have the most basic ideas explained in an easy to understand way. Chessmaster is much better at doing this than any book because it has visual elements ANd audio elements AND interactive elements.
After completing Waitzkin's tutorials in chessmaster and if you're feeling good, try picking up 1) a BASIC tactics book (no combination books) 2) Irving Chernev's "Logical Chess" 3) Dan Heisman's "everyone's second chess book"
But thats getting a bit ahead of ourselves...

Hi, let me introduce myself. My name is Terrance and I am a 22 year old canadian. I got into chess after watching a movie that inpired me to buy my own hand carved cherry wood board and play other chess enthusiasts online (almost daily). I had an instant obsession with the game when I was reunited with it just several months ago and I am now hoping to become a master chess player one day.
I made this thread to gather advice from others on how I can become better. I do not know how to read the algebraic equations of chess and that is something that I was also want to learn and any links to online tutorials, books or general advice would be greatly appreciated.
Ive been playing chess for 27 years, and still i have lots to learn, the Canadain open will be held in Edmonton Alberta in 2009. two things you can do to improve your chess, slove problems, and play live chess. jump in, play all the chess you can, join your local club. My CFC rating is 1640 highest was 1810, go for it!!!!!
