Beginner to ELO 2200 in year

2200 seems too high to me, it took magnus carlsen like 3-4 years to get from 1000-2200 between the ages of 8-11.

I think around 1800 is a much more realistic goal, especially for a man as busy as you

Yes, blogging about it is a great idea (and I would improve my english as well ) :-)

Yes, this isn't a bad idea.

On a motorcycle forum I belong to, there was a guy who posted something like he wants to race within a month or something after getting his first bike.  Everybody's like: "right", "sure".  But guess what? He actually raced and placed very well and blogged his whole journey.  The blog to proved to be very popular.  Let me see if I can find it...

On a piano forum I belong to, some guy posted about achieving ABSRM grade 8 within a year (from no piano experience).  He also blogged about it, and the blog was very popular even though he ended up testing grade 2 (can't remember how well he did) at the end of the year.  I'll also see if I can find it...

The key in both is that they went thru it for a year and learned a great deal.  I think you can do the same.

I remember seeing the same thing, the guy got to like grade 5 or 6 or something then the website disappeared lol

It's extremely improbable, but if you're doing it for the journey, not just the destination, it's worth a shot.

Can't seem to find the piano blog; the site seems to not keep the old posts.

Yeah that, and one club member said to me that having a kid costs about 100-200 rating points tongue.png

I'm thinking about starting a challenge for 2018. Improving my chess and reaching a 2200 ELO in just one year. I have a fulltime job, three little kids, a wife and a dog to care about. And I'm over 40 years old. Do you think that it is possible? Would it be a life changing experience or just another Don quixote? What do you think?

Since you want an ELO rating you will have to play OTB, online doesn't do it.

Your biggest obstacle will be finding enough rated games and having time to play them.  With a full time job and a family, how many nights/weekends can you give up to dedicate yourself to actually driving somewhere and playing?

Hope you can pull it off or at least see enough progress to keep you going.

Don't listen to these guys, I am 1500 strength in 1-2 months (from around 1000) so it really isn't that hard.

I just hovered over your name and it gives your rating as 1189.

Hello guys, I am 39 yo too.

My father ( who is spanish and live back in Spain now) taught me the game when I was a kid and haven't played seriously after. I decided to start playing in a chess club last year and played some competitions.

I started to lose all my games and finally got ranked 1234 ELO in june (after like 6 months). But I lost some points and I am now 1175!

I am also working and studying to get a bachelor's degree. But I have no kids like you.

I read a lot of books or try to. ( but reading is not enough, you have to read them again and try to read them an active way. I am too passive when reading.

You cannot just read a chess book like any other book if you want to improve. You have to work the games and positions, the exercices etc) .

I try to analyze my games after either that I lose or win.

I have started to watch videos and do exercices on chess.com.

My personnal challenge is only to be 1400 ELO at the end of my second year !

Your challenge could still be possible as every one is different but it seems almost impossible or at least really hard. If you really want to succeed I would advice you to get a personnal coach and work at least 2 or 3 hours chess a day.

Goold luck on your challenge ! happy.png

I'll try to do mine as well.

Vincent.

But 1500 is VERY different from 2200! You don't improve linearly!

Maybe that's it, he blogged on his web site and not on the forum.  Grade 5 isn't bad at all for somebody starting with 0 experience and do it within a year.

I have a multi-step solution for this:

- Give up my job

- Get divorced

- Anyone wants a giant dog?

-  And innoculating the chess passion my kids ;-)

(ok, I say ELO but I mean any quantitative measurement of a concrete or not so concrete chess strenght)

That´s the point,

FIDE rating = a lot of time investment but no cheating (or much more difficult)

online rating = nobody (inlcuding my future ex-wife) is going to bet against me if I can cheat

Any method despite of converting my playing places in the next "Big Brother" for demonstrating the people who bet against me that I don´t cheat?

Thank you all for your feedback!

Vincent, I hope we can share an OTB when you visit your father...

Of course you can do it! Don't listen to the naysayers. If you can conceive it, you can achieve it! I would advise you to quit smoking and go to a gym three times a week.

Can you read my mind?
