I know internet problems that a lots of phising,hacking...is what not to be avoidable, but there are ways to overcome this by implementing tight securities and many things.nowadays it's being done by some talented programmers.
Being a IM or GM via online chess

Why should fitness factor comes here? it's upon the player who will play online like the way he would have been playing going some places. If player can't participate for some health problems in both onine or location games then he misses the game, but in case of playing via net he could have taken some advantages of playing from home becasue of his illness.

@volcano yes another way it could be as well as the current way is simply. The way science fiction shows it's not far we will see this.
@palm yes i never played real tournament, but that did not mean that i can't show the lights
I will be off now may be i going to answer later

If FIDE would stage online rated tournaments where one can earn IM and GM norms, how much prize fund would be reasonable and would they get sponsors interested? Just my 2 cents.

Its hard enough to prevent cheating at OTB tournaments now.
Just use online for fun and training for real chess.
It's time to think or make progress for implementing playing FIDE recognized online chess games/tournaments in this inevitable digital world.People nowadays feel comfort playing this kind of games via internet instead of going some other locations.
That's not going to happen it's impossible for Fide to control abuse on the Internet you could have third parties play your entire game or give you advice on moves or consult engines do whatever you want.
Who's going to accept playing faceless opponents who could rob them?!

The case of "health problems" that prevent OTB play has been adressed by FIDE already - see here for instance paragraph 10.
The way you say it, the same objections you raise towards OTB chess apply to, for instance, voting in most countries (where you have to physically go to the polling station). Don't you think it would be a fight of higher worth, if your real motivation is not plain laziness ?

@alec your point is what remains in uncertainty, but there may be ways to pull through these difficulties with tight security measures.Or might be that in some cases still it can be fruitful excluding Fide top norms.

The problem is cheating; at home you could do all sorts of things to cheat such as use an engine, books or written notes, or ask your grandmaster friend to help you.

If I have time and money, I go to tournaments in different places. I like to play chess but I also like to travel, see new places, try local food etc.
For the online chess, I agree with you. There is such a need but what about cheating, especially if the competition involves $$$.

GM's should always have to play face to face. Carlsen gets heaps more respect from me because he travelled to India and beat their champion over there.
It makes them go outside their comfort zone. The old film of Fischer getting off the plane in Iceland is priceless. Moments like that are important. Besides, if the player is going to bail out it is also a long flight home. Lol.
