If not, than the only other piece that can move at the beginning is knight
Snowchlobe

move any central pawn 2 squares up to control the centre. that's the best first move.

I'd say to start, move the pawn in front of the king two spaces and then move the king ahead. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

That is one of the worst answers in chess.com history.

The opening poster has asked what is the best piece to begin with

So people recommended a pawn ? - since when did a Pawn become a piece?

It's generally Knights before Bishops. so Knight is your answer.

MariasWhiteKnight

The move 1. e4 is the most popular choice. Its good for beginners up to the best players of all times.

Wtf I cant properly post positions anymore ?!? Apparently somebody is changing something about the forum software in this regard.

Snowchlobe

6 it's spelt centre in the uk.

MariasWhiteKnight

This is how I wanted to post it:

Nope, still doesnt work. Cant display the position after 1. e4. Site just wont let me.

"... since when did a Pawn become a piece?"

Possibly since FIDE began publishing the laws.

2.2 At the beginning of the game White has 16 light-coloured pieces (the ‘white’ pieces); Black has 16 dark-coloured pieces (the ‘black’ pieces). ...

For black - Nf6 is by far the most popular move for move 1.
For white - Nf3 is most popular in white's first four moves -
but not on move 1.
Its E4 instead. Why? You might get many answers -
But idea: e4 is one of only two moves that deters black from beginning with Nf6.
Black can still reply to e4 with Nf6 but then white can push with e5 bumping the knight and that's Alekhine's defense but black usually doesn't want to play that.
the other first white move that might deter Nf6 is g4. The Grob.
But e4 is a much better move for move 1 than g4 is.
------------------
I like d4 better for white on move 1. Its second most popular.
And l like Nf3 most of all for move 1.
Its #3 in popularity among titled players apparently.
But to each his own.
None of white's 20 move options for move 1 'lose'.

I've found that games often don't post with the names of the opponents clearly at top and bottom also making it clear who's got white and who's black. (obviously I'm talking about diagrams not starting at the beginning of games).
Somebody told me that isn't new but I don't agree.
Used to be they displayed the opponents properly.

As white, you can play e4 (like this)

Or d4 (like this)

But as black you might want to do a bit of research (how to defend and attack to openings) as white choose the first move
