Best chess player ever

Botvinnik was world class both before and after the six years of World War II.
Who knows how he would have done if there had been no war?
He wasn't just a chess world champion - he was arguably the greatest chess coach ever.
He was also an electrical engineer and was part of the war effort for his country.
But that must have been a distraction in his chess development.
----------------
Lasker was another one who's life was more balanced than so many master chess players.
Lasker very well educated.
Another player whose chess career continued after World War II.
A man who even had conversations with Freud and Einstein.
Lasker was Great.
The Lasker principle in chess:
If you see a good move then before playing it - look for a better one.

ik, but age doesnt matter as much in chess, altho it is impressive

Hi borovicka !
Magnus has some advantages over Kasparov - with MC having been born into the information age and with the usual advantage of being able to go through GM games going back through the decades.
I would pick Kasparov as the best player ever - until Magnus.
But if Kasparov was born the same time as Magnus I tend to think Garry would be better.
----------------------
Its a crazy 'if' though.
For one thing Kasparov wouldn't have had Botvinnik and others to coach him if he was born much later.
alternative realities.
They use a different ball in golf now.
And much better drivers.
I think Jack Nicklaus would be best if he was 'brought forward'.
-------------
Regarding best players - if Tal and Capablanca were brought forward ... its often thought they were the most talented players.
But if you're talking about plain intelligence and therefore the ability to adapt to new situations - my pick would be Lasker.

If I had to pick 'most intelligent player' I'd pick Lasker.
If I had to pick 'great player but with the least ability to adapt to conditions I'd pick Fischer as least able to adapt.
He let things bother him that he shouldn't have.
Most tactical talent and creative player I'd pick Tal.
Most lucid and raw-talent player I'd pick Capablanca.
Most practical organized 'lets get down to business' player I'd pick Botvinnik.
Most benefitting from the information age and with fantastic memory I'd pick Magnus Carlsen.
Hardest to beat player might have been Karpov and if you make a mistake he'll Kill.
But with the most Game and the most tenacious determined and battle-hardened and Formidable Competitor -
its Garry Kasparov.

hate to break it with you, but Carlsen is the best
There's nothing to break.
Its a discussion.
Everybody has their own take.
Should I add 'hate to break that with you'?

The discussions of 'best player' in whatever sport go on year in year out.
Been going on for hundreds of years.
Or try - thousands. Thousands of years.
Sometimes - people even go by nationality.
The 'home team' mentality.
Ask an american who the best ever is/was
Ask a russian who it is.
Ask a Norwegian.
Try asking Cubans.
You know the deal.
Try asking whoever who it was - which country - actually won World War II
You know the deal.

I just got a book by Bobby Fischer called "My 60 memorable games" which really reminds me what a brilliant mind he is. his games and his thought process are truly brilliant, then again I assume all GM's think like that. I'm interested in what Magnus Carlsen would have to wright if he wrote a chess book, because I realized how brilliant Bobby was by reading his books but I have no real evidence as to if his thought process is normal among GM's. That's why it would be cool hearing Magnus's insights if he wrote a book.

I like Fischer. Is this answer subjective? Or are we just looking to know who has received a record number of awards? In my opinion, Fischer did a simply amazing creative and unique job in The Golden Age of Chess... As for other sports as points of comparison, football or others, it also happens. There are athletes who win more trophies, but others are uncrowned kings that people prefer or who have more fans but fewer titles or achievements and they also get incredible jobs and contribute important things to the sport. I have favorite bodybuilders like Gunther Sklierkamp or Mike Mentzer, and Mislov Sarcev and Lee Haney.
