What I'm really looking for but haven't yet found is an app to keep my opening lines and variations in for training purposed. Like the Chess Position Trainer or Bookup (now Chess Openings Wizard).
I have spent hours in the past couple of weeks since buying my iphone trying to decide which apps to buy. In fact, it was the purchase of my iphone that got me playing again regularly! I find it a great way to play. So far I've bought Hiarcs but I'm on the look out for another app, something different. I'll consider the points in these summaries.
I don't have an I-phone, wouldn't buy one either because my I-pod Touch freezes every now and then. It's just a case of turning it off and back on but its just not right. I want to like Apple but I can't. I think they should be rebranded as 'Lemon'.
How could you forget chess.com (the iphone app?) Its actually not very polished, the interface is quite confusing and it will not play either live chess or 960 games. Nonetheless, its the best chess correspondence app. Chess with friends has no ratings...how many on this cite want to play people of random strength? Also, I'm really hoping for something better then handy chess to connect to fics. Maybe it is currently the "best" but it isnt very good.
I am sorry my first post was so negative. It is a good list. May I repost it on toucharcade, an iphone forum, with attribution to you?
Sure. Also Im not 100% sure the chess.com app was live when I wrote this... it may have been but they sure dont advertise it in the app store if that's that case.
You might consider Opening Pro. Its got alot of openings to choose from. I like that I can force the computer to play a certain opening against me.
It's because of the chess.com app I'm here. It's so much better than the free chess with friends app, which has no features whatsoever. You don't even see the annotated moves. Chess.com has ratings too, which makes the games more worthwhile. I don't mind the lack of live chess as I'm only interested in correspondence games.
Hi, i wrote a nice chess clock for iPhone. I think this can be a usefull one too. ;)
See under: http://chessclockclassic.yolasite.com
Here is a list:
Shredder: a powerful engine that allows you to plug in a position and play the game vs the computer. Also it has analysis and 1000 tactics in it.
Fritz: Its powerful but I hate the interface. Put its a good app.
tChess Pro: The one reason I like this is because you can download a pgn on the iPhone and "open" it in tChess Pro. You could, for example, download all your games on this site in one pgn file and open it in tChess and play them. It also has computer play as well. But I only use it for importing pgn games. (If you get Airfiles then you can open the pgn into Airfiles and rename the file and then open it in tChess.
Chess.com app: I could also mention another app where you can play blitz and live chess, but now that chess.com has this its an awesome app. You can play all your chess.com games, but now play blitz and bullet chess. Also you can pay the tactics as well.
There are many others. I'm embarrassed to admit that I have downloaded nearly all of the "good" ones. But I've honed it down to these.

Sorry to hear you had problem with your iPod Touch. I have one of them too, loaded with all sorts of apps, but it hasn't frozen once on me (touch wood).
However, I can't like Apple after they made my iTunes stop being able to access the store because I refused to upgrade to the latest version. (I upgraded from 8 to 9 and it was such a total disaster in terms of usability that I had to downgrade again.) Their loss though - I used to buy stuff regularly in the iTunes store and that came to an abrupt stop when they insisted on me upgrading.
Does anyone realize that you can now play Live games on the Chess.com app?
Ya, that is awesome... now they just need to unlock the rotation of the app so you can switch it from portrait to landscape mode at will.
Are there any apps for the iPhone that records variations?
I want to analyse a game myself, and have the app keep track of the variations and save them to a pgn file. Any ideas?
Shredder and Fritz both lose the variations, they only keep one line.
Not.. quite.. yet.

This (overpriced!) one supports variations insofar as you can take back moves and play different ones without the app forgetting the variation line. You can navigate back to it and play through it again.
However, it exports only the main line via email, etc., so at that point, no better than the competition.
tChess Pro (a favorite of mine) now supports (and exports) textual annotations on a given move, but (so far) it's just stuff you type...
Whats up. I researched dozens and dozens of chess apps for the iPhone and came up with a list of 10 I think just about every (tournament) chess player should have. These are not the 10 best chess apps, so please dont scream at me when your favorite one doesnt show up. These are basically the ten most useful tools for a tournament player wishing to leverage the power of his iPhone to make him/her a better player.
Enjoy.
