Bobby Fischer: Autistic, Obsessive-Compulsive, or just plain Psychopathic

As a retired special ed teacher that dealt with autistics throughout their entire spectrum, I seriously doubt that Fischer was autistic in any way. Even high fuctioning autistics don't manuever succesfully through society. They almost always must follow a set schedule and any deviation in their daily routine can set them off into emotional hysterics. They usually require someone to watch over them into adulthood and if they are ever left on their own they have problems dealing with day to day life and decisions that we take for granted. They need someone to direct them and keep them focused.

Don't mix chess with life, don't get obsessed with chess and don't play too much chess. If you cross this line, you will end up becoming crazy like Fischer. Plain and simple.

I think some people forget that Fischer had an incredibly arduous and impoverished childhood. His mother didn't seem very attached to him. He learned who his real father was at a young age and was never socialized with peers in a normal way like you and me usually are.

These factors could combine to develop various mental illnesses in almost everyone. I don't want to speculate in diagnosis, it's a field of science. Remote diagnoses (by educated mental health professionals) of people who've never been consulted is illegal in my country, and probably in others as well.

If you are extremely well functioning in one area (one could say genious) it doesn't mean you are protected from disease.

Life is much more than chess...It`s only a game, a beautiful one, but just a game.

An important factor in Fischer's personal problems people tend to forget was his presumed hypersensitivity. It is known he suffered from hyperaccousions. For example the spinning sound of the cameras at his first match against Spassky, which would have made him forfeit the match, were it not that Spassky was so sportive to agree to play in the next room, further from the noise.
