I'm not the one here that needs to think-- I know what's happening to MagMax right now. For the first time in years his confidence is rocked, not by the losses to Caruana (who plays white in the Berlin better than anyone else) or Anand (a legend who outplayed Magnus in a quasi-Breyer--not Magnus' best opening), but by not knowing the rules for this tournament. He embarrassed himself on his home turf in the first round and he hasn't gotten over it yet. That's all. Or do you really think that he is doomed to be a cellar-dweller for the rest of his career? The idea that he is done from one bad result in one tournament is just as ridiculous as the crowning of Caruana as the next champion from his one outstanding result in one tournament. Calm down; this will not last, just as Caruana's success has not been repeated. By your logic, the whole chess world should now bow down and genuflect in the general direction of Topolav, right? I don't see that happening anytime soon.
The soundness of sacrifices don't make them legitimate sacrifices? Are you kidding me? You should deliberately play bad (unsound) moves and hope it works out for you? By that definition, Topolav scored a briliiancy in the first round. Sorry, that don't cut it. There is no way I will ever agree with that--bad moves are bad moves, and if they work out, you're not good, you're lucky--like Topolav in the first round. There's an expression that a strong player told me a long time ago, "The problem with swash-buckling chess is that you cannot swash if the other player doesn't buckle." The fact that you describe the '72 as blase tells me all I need to know here--and when computers play in events with their rent hanging on the outcome, or with their children in the hospital, then maybe I'll consider what they have to say as valid. You might as well ask a hammer or any other tool. But there was an incredible amount of tension in the '72 match and Spassky did not rise to the occasion, just as Anand did not rise in Chennai.
And show me where I made this statement: "Rocksolid water-impenetrable chess may not a Bohemian player make." You get no pass from me on this, and you don't put words in my mouth. If that's the best you have, you lose.
Ok bang bangs, you're the boss.
