to becoming the best known man, at the time, in the world
Lol.
I understand your extreme envy and anquish Scott boy, being England or the UK has never had their own world champion, but try to keep your chin up, that is no need to hold your head down in shame.
What does him being American have to do with it? Just found it funny that you think Fischer was more famous than Ali, Pele etc.
Show us this photo that you took with your cell phone, and we will determine if he is a dead ringer for Fischer in his 20s.
Okay, Scott, I'll give you Ali was very famous at the time. He's is my homestate, FWIW. Who is Pele? That some English rock group like the Beatles?
We need to throw in Elvis too. But I guess you had to be there. An American was finally the official world champion at chess?!! - and he beat the Russians?!! It was indeed news all over the world, even to non chess players. Guess you had to be there.
But I digress. This thread has gone awry. Mr Collins, I took the photo on my cheap TracPhone and know of no way to get it to internet since I don't have internet on my TracPhone. If you know a way, I'll sure post it here. Ha, maybe you had to be there too. The kid was a pretty good poker player and we had a kick out of calling him Bobby Fischer - I think he didn't even know who BF was.
Good points both, Scotland and Angland. I love the UK sense of humour. My GGGGGGG Grand Daddy came from Scotland and/or Wales. I aspire to get the rating of either of you. Maybe in 2 years. I like Scotland's avatar. (Have gun will travel - only an old American will understand this - maybe Palidin was an GM?)
Bobby was ugly??? He was as handsome in the eyes of chess players as Clark Cable (know who HE was? - but right, Humphrey Bogart was ugly as a bucket of worms)
Long live William Wallace and Joan of Arc.
I was playing poker yesterday and looked over to my left and my mouth dropped open. There sat a young Bobby Fischer - the kid was a dead ringer for him. He could play Fischer in his 20's in a movie. I took his photo with my cellphone.
Then I thought, wonder why they don't make a movie about Bobby Fischer? Yes, they have the documentaries, but a real movie about his whole life - young shy kid comes from obscurity out of nowhere from age 6 to becoming the best known man, at the time, in the world, the world champion of chess. Quite a success story. Then he thumbs his nose at authorities and disappears.
