Therefore, since there is a higher percentage of male chess players than males in the non-playing population average brain size in the chess playing population is greater than the non-playing population.

The main reason for relating brain size to bodyweight is that large creatures use a much larger amount of brain for motor control. It is not obvious that they need to, but they do. Biggest brain of a land animal is that of the elephant as a result.
