Browser discrimination on chess.com

Every time I log in to play some blitz, I have to hit "share" first to clear your really annoying popup that suggests I migrate to an "updated, modern browser" with the two button examples below it, Chrome and Firefox.  I've got Internet Explorer.  Does this make me some kind of a second-class citizen?  Does anybody in the usership, moderation or administration have any kind of a problem with this?  If I didn't hit "share" first, the popup would cost me ~3 seconds out of my 300 allotted seconds to clear.

I have Internet Explorer too, but I don't have this issue because I don't play chess on chess.com.

Hope you find my suggestion helpful.

Why not just get chrome?

If you can make some kind of case for the proposition that I wouldn't suck in blitz chess as bad using Chrome as opposed to IE, I'm willing to listen to it.

I suck at blitz chess too, but I don't have to worry about it because I don't play chess on chess.com.

Hope you find my suggestion helpful.

IE has 99 problems but blitz ain’t one. Still, it really IS time to upgrade to a modern browser...

I've read your browser suggestions and maybe you're right and maybe you're wrong.  Maybe Microsoft has fallen by the wayside to second-class status and maybe it hasn't.  I'm an old guy but not a Neanderthal, the Wintel/IE platform is what I'm accustomed to.  Every single game I have lost on this website was on account of my own stupid moves or running out of time, not on account of my prehistoric configuration.

instead of Chrome and Firefox, go with Brave noobs.

OK, OP, but back to your original question as to whether anybody had a problem with the site urging you to use a modern browser, the answer is fairly unanimous. People familiar with browser technology rarely choose IE for all the reasons above. Whether or not Microsoft has fallen to “second-rate status” is hardly relevant- even they no longer fully support IE. They’ve moved on and you should too. At any time, chess.com (or any site you frequent) might change their code in such a way so as to be incompatible with legacy browsers like IE. When that happens and the site crashes for the remaining IE users, they will rightly note that all had been advised. Feel free to ignore the advice, but few will agree that the advice shouldn’t have been given.

Microsoft is no longer developing new features for IE, and is only providing updates for security holes and bug fixes.  They've switched to Microsoft Edge as their new browser: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/microsoft-edge.  It does share some technology with IE, so if you're still used to IE, you might find it's close to what you're used to.

However, the other major browsers, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, are well worth a look.

Whatever you do, though, I would recommend switching away from IE.  An increasing number of sites will be pulling the plug on it in the near future.

Internet Explorer? Does that exist yet?

Just look at IE11 support of the various html5 features:

https://html5test.com/compare/browser/ie-11.html

Of course older versions fare even worse.

chess dot com does not use java or flash any more, which is the right thing to do- just pure html5, and there is work to be done yet to make the v3 interface to work as it should.

Some sites are even complaining about Firefox 52, which I'm currently using (and which is a few light years ahead of IE 11). Needless to say, I won't upgrade to a newer version- Firefox is slowly, but steadily turning into a shitty Chrome sub-clone.

I hear you guys, and I appreciate your input.  I'm not a power user in the same sense as some of you; I don't mine Bitcoin and I don't play those shooters where I have to draw down on someone in Antarctica before they draw down on me.  On the other hand, I have originated and sold a URL for $150,000, and I have used the internet to lead a coup against the management of a two-county electric utility cooperative, so I'm not a total derp.  In every case, IE was sufficient for what I wanted to do.  Tell me just one thing I would be interested in doing that I would need Chrome or Firefox to do.

Well, plenty. Just try to do, say, a bank transaction with IE11.

IE is still sufficient for most things, but over time it's going the way of Netscape Navigator.  Technology moves on over time.

My internet orders work fine with IE.  For in-person bank transactions, I like to drive into town and do them while shopping so my bank tellers can see me in my resplendent glory.  I am a retired local judge of ten years' service.  They know who I am.

For now.  It's only a matter of time until IE stops getting new security fixes.  Then, using IE will expose you to all kinds of malware, and many sites will not just warn you, but actually block you from doing anything other than basic browsing.

A Model A might be a fun car to tinker with, but nobody would use it as their main car.  Modern cars are faster, safer, and more fuel efficient.  IE is going the same way.

Maybe y'all are right,  I'll think about it.  The thing is, I can beat almost half of the people on here while driving a Model A.  What would you do if I suddenly showed up in a T-Bird?
