bullet 1 l 1

You chose 1|1 as an option. This is an incremental time control, not a delay time control.

i am confused about this as well. how do i get the extra second? what do you mean move faster than a second? when?

Your time control must be set to an incremental control, such as x|y where y seconds is a positive number and x is measured in minutes.
.
For example, 1 | 1 means a game of 1 minute per player with 1 second increment for the player who just completes a move.
.
15 | 10 means a game of 15 minutes per player with 10 second increment for the player who just completes a move.
.
If you are able to make a move very quickly (eg. you make a move 0.5 seconds after your opponent completes his move), then the effects of the increment will outweigh the time you spent on your move. As such, it's possible for a game to exceed the starting time allotted.

1|1 is a time control where you have a basic time of 1 minute, and then you get 1 second of bonus time each move. By playing in less than a second you end up with more time than before. This is called an "increment".

You have 1mn on your clock. You move a piece. Your move took 3 seconds. You now have 57 seconds on your clock ; but 1 second is added to it because you made a move and you end up with 57 seconds.
So imagine your first move takes 0.5 seconds. You will end up with 1mn 0.5 seconds on your clock.
