Well i remember Michael Adams saying in an interview that chess is not about thinking 20 moves ahead or 30. Its all about calculation.

Well guys how you do it? I mean calculation!!. How to calculate and how it is benifit, honestly i didnt got what Adam wanted to explain.

Calculation is thinking ahead and understanding your position. Practice practice practice!Smile

looking for more clear rational explanation.

I wonder if those are the same words he used.  Looking ahead a number of moves is commonly called calculating.

It is true though that a grandmaster's strength is not the number of moves they look ahead, their strength is the ability to judge if a move or position is good or bad using their knowledge of chess and experience.

But whether you mean visualizing many moves ahead or understanding positions the way to get better is to practice it.  Play games, analyse, talk to stronger players, read books, etc.

The point of calculation is to deduce the best move based on projected continuations, in order to produce the most desirable result.  Miscalculation is where your opponent shows you with his response, that your projections were wrong, and that his move was something you either didn't consider, or simply overlooked in your "calculations".

The deeper your calculations, the more precise your played moves will be.  Forgetting about the software aspect for a second, the faster your chess computer, the deeper its calculations per unit of time, and the stronger it will be because its moves will be more precise.

I don't understand what Michael Adams is saying if he says "...it's not about thinking x moves ahead, but about calculation".  That statement seems to contradict itself.

It seems to me that when Adams says "thinking 20 moves ahead or 30", he's talking about a long term, strategic evaluation of a position. For example. assessing the White side of the Exchange variation of the Ruy Lopez as winning because of Black's doubled pawns. Of course, nobody calculates variations 20 or 30 moves deep OTB. And it's not enough to simply say "well, this looks good for me. I must be winning. You have to calculate some actual variations to succeed, otherwise everything is just a crap shoot.
