Yes you can mate with a Bishop and Knight.
It is not possible to checkmate with 2 knights. But it is possible with a knight and bishop in about 30 moves with best play from any given starting point.

Yes, I was going to say when pawn(s) are left on the board they can block off escape routes, and also avoid stalemates, enabling forced mates.
