I am happy that I've got a discussion about this, I had thought about it for a while but never thought so many would comment!

Jeez, where the hell have you been?

Enough for me to read the comments!

The simple answer is no.

People have different talents. Get used to it.

someone who already is grandmaster. that person cannot become grandmaster, no?

I do not think even if most people completely change their personality and their thinking about chess and devote their life to chess--that they could become a grandmaster. It takes more than the will to sacrifice and working hard.

Assuming there even is such a thing as talent. Smile

But there are numerous studies to the contrary!  It's just a matter of hours.  10,000 hours.  That's what I've read.

Here's a detailed training program that's been used with young pupils to help them attain an IM rating, The baseline requirement  before  starting the 2-year program is an ELO rating of 2200: http://chessok.com/?p=21207

I am sure you don't believe everything you've read. As it turns out, the studies that made these claims have been challenged and fairly comprehensively repudiated. Yes, modern science is in general agreement that there's such a thing as talent.

You can look it up for yourself if you're really interested.

I offer three ways to do it:

1. Buy it. Offer to buy out all of your opponent's game in every tournament you participate that is if you can afford it.

2. Marry it. Marry a GM or a WGM. Unless you get divorced you will always be associated with a GM.

3. If you're a woman get a sperm preferrably from a GM.

Change your name to Master and when you get old and have grand kids tell them to call you grandmaster instead of grandpa! Smile

i think anyone can become a grandmaster, sure i may not be right, maybe not everyone. But thinking that anyone can become a GM keeps us motivated, and motivation is one of the most important things in becoming a GM

I mean.. Just if someone playes and learn chess and train him/herself systematically can he/her become grandmaster? Or do you have to have some gift to do that?

Yes, with hard work AND PRACTICE everyone can become a grandmaster!!
