short answer: no

long answer: I'll let someone else explain it.

Good question! Becoming a grandmaster is one of my personal goals.  I feel like I'm halfway there.  If you want to do it, go for it.  It will take a lot of work, though. I know a 2200 friend of mine  (and mentor) who took several years to get that rating.  It also took me a while to get USCF ~1400.  However, there is life outside chess.  You may have heard of teenage grandmasters, but they likely don't have much life outside chess.  PS I heard of some kids who study 4 hours a day with schoolwork to boot!  What I am doing is take 30 min to 1 hour on chess daily ( or most days) and try to find a good tourney to head back to.  I also want to have a bit of life outside chess too! (Catfish noodling, bass tourney, Appalachin Trail, storm chasing, etc...).  I bet you will become a grandmaster if you put effort in your work!

Why is it you want to become a Grandmaster anyway ? That's a 99.999 % sure way to disappointment.

Try setting goals step by step and try to become a Candidate Master first. That is a realistic first goal and well achievable if you put enough work into it.

And only once you have that title, set as your goal the next higher title.

urk
The vast majority of these wannabe GMs never even attain a 2000 rating. And that should have been their goal. Or just to become an A-player, that's a worthy goal. I respect A-players.
But grandmaster?

Why does everyone want to become a Grand Master?  What about becoming a doctor or a lawyer?  Yeah I am not suppose to answer a question with a question so I will instead give you the most cliche answer possible.. Just be yourself! wink.png

No, you'll struggle to put in enough in time- life gets in the way- and you absolutely have no idea how much work it requires

so, No.

First step:

become a GRANDPATZER. Then you try to improve.

thegreat_patzer

I tried that.

It didn't work!

I was a good patzer though.  if that is your aim, lots of posts on the forums is helpful....

No one that isn't talented to begin with will ever be a GM. How talented? I would say 1800 within 12 months.

chesster3145

Put simply, my goal in chess is to get some kind of a title eventually.

If it doesn't happen, that's life.

MartyMcfly85

Couple years? No. Couple decades? MAYBE.

BronsteinPawn

I agree with the Peruvian guy.

Enjoy chess while your parents bring food to the table, cause once you get your girlfriend pregnant by accident, chess will not cut it. I know it.

BronsteinPawn

You can probably get away with getting a GM title and getting some food but you would have to be super organized, do not live life, and probably die virgin.

ESP-918

You can become a GM no doubt about it! Don't listen to the negative people here.

I would say 10 hours a day of study chess ( everything not just tactics), 6 days a week, no alcohol and healthy lifestyle( lots of physical exercising), plenty of sleep, 10 years time you CAN become GM.

chesster3145

Really, people? Let's face it: if you aren't a true natural talent, you can forget about GM.

BronsteinPawn

Yeah the russian guy thinks that just because he is from Russia somehow he can become GM.
