In the end, it doesn't matter if someone sucks at chess or not. You look "cool" playing it. It's the "in" thing.

iluvzmituna

that may be how to market chess in the "real" world!

It is the in thing to do among many Asian American families, but it will never be the in thing to do among the general population within the US.

If someone was willing to put up the money, I would put splashy commercials on billboards and TV with supermodels... That's the real problem with chess...extremely poor PR and marketing.

We could even phone people while they are at dinner and invite them to a local chess club. Smart thinking, eh?

chess would be much much more popular if chess pros actually make a good living like golf or tennis players.

Let's face it, most of the top chess player doesn't make much money at all playing chess, they have to do things like teaching chess to survive.

We need GMs to start smiling and look happy while playing also! And when they play a winning move, they need to be able to look like a tennis pro after winning a big point and have some kind of victory dance after a win, like a soccer player after scoring a goal.

They should be able to write words of encouragement to themselves during the game, like "keep calm and don't lose yer head, man".

I once heard Gufeld danced around the table after beating Benjamin using the Pirc, or something similar.

Sucking at chess is a sign of having a life.

Yaaaaay!   I knew I had something.   Laughing

They should come to really big tournaments dress up in extravagant costumes, like Elvis P. did, or rock stars, boxers etc. they should hire Michael Buffer to introduce the players like he does for boxersSurprised Then they can have very pretty girls walking by with signs how much time on each others clock remaining.lololo

So there you have it!

To make chess appealing to the general public, chess players need to start getting real and begin to look like regular people. Time to drop the deadpan facial expressions and start enjoying themselves, dress properly like regular human beings and play for big bucks. The call goes out!

No. People should stay as they are. Chess is for nerds only.

Intellectual activities are essentially uncool.Wink

FIDE rules must include that chessplayers be dedicated followers of fashion. Chessplayers must only be allowed indulge in nerdiness if nerd is current and in vogue. No more should chess be allowed lag 100 years behind the times. Time for chess people to stand up and make chess sexier than football!

Get some nuts!!! Rrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmm!

Intelligence has nothing to do with chess.

Yes.  But you get hundreds of these, 'will chess make me intelligent', 'am I intelligent', 'am I a genius at chess yet' threads.  People wanting chess to bolster their ego on their intelligence rather than just taking it as a game which has a very specific and limited skill.  It's a bit tiresome reading all those threads.

iluvzmituna

Since chess is the brain game, it's always attracting wannabe brainiacs. About time chess was made off limits to sub-150 IQ. Get some nuts!!

YES!

What would be interesting if chess.com could break down the % of player in each level like from 900 - 2400, wonder how many are 900-1200,  1200 1400,  1400-1600 etc? Actually which level is the most? The you can tell better if you are a suckerSmile

Elroch

Take a look: http://www.chess.com/echess/players

Thanks Elroch, That is what I wanted to know and surprised, I thought 1400 would be most popular? But that is close.

Harvey_Wallbanger

Yeah, around 1200 is the mean. And getting from 1200 to 1400 is no easy task, as memory serves me.
