Can you consider Chess a sport?

It certainly is. When you compete in a tournament with longer time controls sometimes you are sitting over the board for four, five or even six hours. It takes physical stamina, good eating habits and strong concentration. You must be in shape, you must eat well and most of all you must focus.

No? Aren't sports physical? I still can't believe some actually think that chess should be in the olympics, jesus christ.

No, also this only has 28 comments including this one, that's barely any comments compared to the largest forums on this site.

One guy told me that judo is not a sport but a martial art, another told me that MMA is not a sport but a martial art, another told me that wrestling is not a sport but a martial art...
whether we agree or not, judo, MMA, wrestling are considered combat sports and with chess is same execpt is not a combat sport but an intellectual or mental sport.
In video game competitions like Tekken it is called cybersport and it is not a combat sport but it is an electronic sport.

exercise is not the criteria that makes something a sport, merely a combination of competition and a level of sustained physical exertion. the post above yours explains why you wrong.

Plato does not dissociate sport from intellect.Probably for reason that he consider a phisic world as reflex of other important things. There are less human phisical sports, such as using a horse, or other instruments or objects, but apparently "Deus est Machine" also on Olimpyads... chess involves psicophysical or, if we prefer, psychomotor skills.Sadly is most possible the introduction of another new mechanical motor on olympics, before than chess. The arguments for adding chess are important... (if you want to add it as an Olympic sport). For me ,a fast-paced chess game is not much different from table tennis psychophysically.
this made it on te leaderboard many years later
