I once observed someone reading Chess Life magazine during an over the board tournament game.
Also one time almost thirty years ago I was listening to a Mets game with headphones during a club ladder game. The Mets scored a run and I cheered despite dropping a piece at that exact moment during the concurrent chess game. My opponent was confused as heck.
