Can you feel angriness through your opponent moves?

Is it possible for one online chess player to feel the anger or strong animosity of his opponent by the sole way that he moves? I mean sometimes the opponent play fast and in a very provocative manner. Maybe it is only to get you out of control.

Or maybe it is only something subjective and all chess games have the same hostility in them?

Well, I can always feel the anger in my opponents, like a regular verbal dispute.

Contempt, yes. Anger? Not so sure.

Contempt can be seen from move one. Let's say a highly rated player palys 1.f3 2.Kf2 3.e3 4.Ke2 5.Qe1 6.Kd1.

That's showing contempt for your ability to use tempi.

The way to punish contempt is to win the game.

Sometimes I get the feeling they're frustrated or confused on what to do next (tempo changes / play gets worse).  I never get the feeling someone's angry though.

But sometimes that can be me projecting my emotions onto them.  Maybe I thinkt he position is irrational, and they don't, and they're just taking time to be sure their intended move works or is the best.

Yeah, something like the your last quote.

Maybe it is some sort of synchronicity, when he can perceive your emotional proyection.

This happens almost always when some player makes an agressive move, like attacking your kingside carelessly, and then the game can turn to very nasty one.

Very subjetive though -- this matter.

Well, sometimes you just cant win the game because you get angry and it blinds you ...

I sense opponents are angry when I take my time in the middle game, making the better moves, getting an advantage, and then just pre-move finish the endgame with little time left.

I usually play 5 minutes, and too often I pre-move win endgames with just 10 seconds on the clock versus my opponent having more than 3 minutes.

Often they flame: "lucky", or rage quick disconnect after they have been mated.

i dont know how could you feel anger through the moves???

of course you can, if you're paying attention.

i find that very esoteric and weird  to think so, i mean in online play at least. In real life its ofc a totally different ballgame.

waffllemaster

Yeah, online I think people just imagine it.  I can play fast, slow, aggressive, passive, all without feeling angry.

As TetsuoShima says though when the person is right in front of you, you can tell a lot more.

SmyslovFan

So, do engines play angry, JDzokic? Do you have examples?

TeraHammer

All engines are angry, duh.

Anger is an approximation to the feeling .. The thing is, they are too much aggressive or reckless … Of course you can take advantage of this … Personally I just cant do that. Only a few times.

goodduck

if the person is angry

then why are they playing chess?

SmyslovFan

Here's a game where I could feel the anger even though I wasn't there:

Why are you angry at someone you dont know, and especially over a game of online chess?

I only play 15 - 30 minutes games. Some players expect you to play like a bullet/blitz. You can tell by their first 5 moves (within 15 seconds). I slow it down and analyze it longer. Yes, I've lost many games in winning positions due to time but it doesn't bother me. Looking back, it gives me satisfaction that I commited few errors and more good moves.

I can feel the anxiety, anger and frustration on the other side when I play slow ( I resign on a lost position if needed be) they taunt and call me names on chat. None bothers me. I play my time not theirs.

Sqod

Yes, in an online game when a player is losing, then plays some fast, careless blunders, then resigns shortly after that, it's pretty clear they're either angry or irritated. Without those clues of timing, though, I believe it would be hard to tell.

I expect good players to be agressive and make threatening moves consistently, so I don't think I would associate strong moves with anger.

However, I have noticed players who reach bad positions or fall slightly behind in material begin to make weak, defensive moves when they should be doing the opposite.  When you are behind in material or position, you do have to make a greater effort to be optimistic about your chances to win and to exercise the clarity of mind as you plan,

Here's a game where my opponent just fell apart after dropping a Bishop for a Pawn early - the game lasted just 14 moves and it was a daily game:

Here's a game where I fell behind in material in addition to being in an awful position and realized the only chance I had was to relentlessly send every piece I had at my opponent's king and hope and pray I'd get a local material superiority and win.  This wasn't anger - it was desperation, but it was also the only logical thing to do.  Somehow I won!

The only time I do is when an opponent will purposely timeout instead of just resigning

I don't really feel anger towards an opponent, more just anger towards how crappy I am lol
