Can you get better at chess by just playing a lot?

I prefer to study the openings by playing a lot of games, rather than reading books. Is that good? Of course, when I read books, I mostly look at the main moves and the most important ones. I like to discover the rest myself. I don't know if that will take me anywhere...? Can you get better at chess by just playing a lot?

It’s just like any skill really. You improve by playing a lot. In chess, you can also improve of course through study, puzzles, learning openings, etc. As you can see, I am a very low rating, but have been slowly climbing. I find that the way I improve the most is simply by playing, study is also crucial, but playing is more so in my opinion. I would suggest playing long games to help improve the most!

Thanks for the advice! I usually play games that last 30 minutes. I definitely see progress! Today I raised my rating to +25! I'm very close to 1200. I'm just sad that I'm not actively playing real chess ... Due to the current situation with the virus, there are no tournaments... ._.

Many strong masters and grandmasters do not read books. They got strong but playi ng many strong players . Also it is a good idea to play an opening before studying it.

Yes.

But you can't just play aimlessly. You have to work hard during each game.
