Cannot find chess article on one of the strongest amateur players ever

Hi all.

I remember there being an article about the death of one of the strongest amateur players ever.

- He was an erudite, and knew history books like the palm of his hand.

- He beat Bobby Fischer many times in Blitz

- He wrote self-defeating comments in his annotated games

- There aren't that many games from him recorded.

- He is from the USA

 

I think the title went something like this:

"strongest amateur player you've never heard of"

"dies the strongest amateur player you've never heard of"

 

And it was written by someone who knew him personally.

 

If anybody can help me find it I'd appreciate it.
