Carlsen's next event looks set to be the 2015 Gashimov Memorial. The field for this event looks amazing, with an average ELO currently at 2789.

A really interesting mix of young guns and old pros here, with almost no one in between. It's almost a clash of the generations!

Prediction is another Carlsen win, but at this stage Kramnik has gone back to being an unknown quantity given his lack of play recently (apart from a great showing in Qatar). Very much looking forward to this one!

Kramnik did rather well in Qatar, but for a player like him I would only see it as a great result if he had won it or at least not lost to Yu. The last time Kramnik won a round robin was back in 2011, and this one looks quite strong. I guess Carlsen and Caruana will be the favourites for top two, but I wouldn't be surprised if Giri or So won it, they have improved a lot recently.

Radjabov is also showing signs he is getting back into good form, and may do well playing at home.

It's possible that after this event (with Zurich and the 3rd Grand Prix considered) there will be 7, even 8 players above 2800. There may also be only one.

Rating inflation isn't real. Players are just better now. It's like those idiots who think Ali would defeat Wladimir Klitschko LOL!

Life itself is an illusion.

If you had an official Elo rating of 1226, as your rating is on here, Carlsen would need to beat you 46 times in a row to achieve 2900. I have absolutely no doubt he would beat you 46 times in a row.

Check out the games and results in the 8 person online tournament I am in now...

More like 460 times.

You know that I don't play serious online. Just for fun.

Giri broke 2800 and Grischuk went up to 2813. More cannon fodder for Carlsen to feed on I think, and this brightens his chances of reaching 2900. There is a big bunch of players now, around the 2800 mark. None of them I would say, are superior to Bobby Fisher's 2780 peak rating (in true skill). And yet, some people still deny that rating inflation exists....

I don't understand them either.

There's a tendency to get excited about round numbers. 2700chess.com for example. The focus on players crossing 2800.

Traditionally 2400 = IM, 2500 = GM

I would like there to be 2600, 2700, 2800 and 2900 norms/titles. I think that would be really great. So even if you're no longer at that level (e.g. Aronian), you can have that title.

The trouble is the title Grandmaster is already such a good sounding title there is little to be added by adding to it, or creating a different title.

Super GM is a bit naff, Elite Master doesn't sound as good.

How about:

2800 = Lord of Chess

2900 = God of Chess

Bring in patzer titles so everyone gets a slice.

ugh just face the facts Carlsen will never reach 2900. He is stabilising at 2860-2880.

For those of us who can't see the future, that is still unknown, not facts. He's only 24 years old so he still has a lot of time to improve.

kiloNewton

i think Carlsen will reach his peak this year.

Carslen has not reached the 2900 level yet but still has a lot to improve on and is very young. Considering has past improvement rate the possibility of him reaching that level is very high.

This thread was actually about Carlsen reaching 2900 in 2014, now 2015.  Now, as then, it is just as unlikely (barely possible) to for him to make 2900 this year...

Of course it is possible that Carlsen can reach 2900 in his career...I don't see anyone worth their salt saying any different.

greenfreeze

how do you know if carlsen wants to get to 2900?

i never talk to carlsen
