I thought yu could not castle after you have been in check but the computer still allows it to happen?

You cannot castle to get out of check.  Nor can you castle into or through check. But if you have been checked in the past you can still castle.

Castling in chess is only possible:

  • If king and rook have not moved before in the game.
  • If the king must not move to a square that is attacked by an enemy piece.
  • If the king is not attacked by a chess piece, which means, if he is not in check.
  • If the squares between the king and the rook are empty.

If you move your king you lose the right to castle.

1. e4  c5  2. Nf3  d6  3. Bb5+  Black has been checked but has not lost the right to 0-0 or 0-0-0

1. f4  e6  2. g4  Qh4+  Black has been checked and HAS lost the right to

0-0 or 0-0-0. So it seems if you are checked on the 2nd move--you lose the right to 0-0 0-0-0 but if you are checked on the 3rd move--you do not lose the right to castle.

You missed one John_Doe18 - the king is not allowed to move through check in order to castle !
For example, white may not castle queenside if d1 is under attack even though all other conditions are met.
