Emmanuel Lasker and Aron Nimzowitsch were playing a game and Lasker had agreed not to smoke his cigars during the game because the latter was allergic to smoke.

About six or seven moves into the game, Lasker pulls out his cigar, bites off the end and puts it in his mouth. Nimzo  immediately jumps up and tells the arbiter “Look, he is smoking!”

The arbiter  says,”No, it is not lit,” to which Nimzo replies,”Ah, but he is threatening  to smoke and everybody knows that the threat is stronger than the execution.

There are 3 versions of this:
A) At the 1927 New York International Milan Vidmar (1885-1962) put a box of cigars on the table before sitting down to play Aaron Nimzovich (1886-1935) , Nimzovich complained to the chief umpire, Geza Maroczy (1870-1951) that his opponent was threatening to smoke.  The umpire told Nimzovich that Vidmar was not smoking.  Nimzovich responded, “I know he isn’t, but he threatens to do so, and the threat in chess is more powerful than the execution.”
B) Another source says that Nimzovich’s opponent was Bogoljubow.
C) Another source says it occurred in Berlin and the opponent was Lasker.
