Change My Mind: The 'Touch Move' Rule is Stupid

To the OP, if you accidently touch a piece you don't have to move it. Read the laws of chess again.

Wrong regarding OTB.

Amazing people post false and misleading information. If a piece is touched (accidentally or not) it must be moved if a legal move can be made when playing OTB.

Think players can claim ... “ oh - it was an accident” and be permitted to move another piece ?

Not so.

Not sure how to quote, but you are wrong.

FIDE Laws of Chess clearly state 'deliberately'.

Not sure where you get your rules from.

From FIDE laws, article 4.

Article 4: The act of moving the pieces
4.1
Each move must be played with one hand only.
4.2.1
Only the player having the move may adjust one or more pieces on their squares, provided that he first expresses his intention (for example by saying “j’adoube” or “I adjust”).
4.2.2
Any other physical contact with a piece, except for clearly accidental contact, shall be considered to be intent.
4.3
Except as provided in Article 4.2, if the player having the move touches on the chessboard, with the intention of moving or capturing:

So clearly accidental touching does NOT mean you have to move a piece.

Why does it even exist? I lost my queen to a Knight irl cuz I accidentally touched my king and my opponent forced me to move it.

The Bunny has been advised against attempting to change minds by the dude below. Sorry.

wtf? I've changed my mind after reading the reply made by a CM. smh

It must be shown/demonstrated that the action was “accidental” and not deliberate to the arbiters. A difficult task. Accidentally touching a piece is an extremely rare event ... so rare in fact I have never seen/heard of the situation where a player was permitted a take-back for accidental touching. If your hands are anywhere near the pieces- how is any claim made that reaching for a piece and touching it was accidental? Perhaps a passerby bumps the players back or he starts a coughing fit ? In any event -can an example be cited? The rule 4.2.2  is in place to cover that 1/million chance.

An example comes to mind. A player makes a castling move (accidentally brushing the Queen with his hand before lifting the King). The opponent makes the claim - he “touched” the Queen 1st and it must be moved. Any arbiter would promptly dismiss the claim as frivolous and give warning.

The “touch move” rule is at the very core of chess competition.
A fundamental rule that governs play (one of the very few outside piece movement).
Without it - Chess would not be what it is.

Just say "I adjust" or "J'adoube" everytime you touch a piece, then you won't have to commit to anything.

ig that works lmao

There was a Yugoslav GM who was so notorious for touching pieces and then denying it (and refusing to move the touched piece) that other GMs started calling him J'adoubovic.

A piece should not count as being touched unless so touching moves it past the boundary of its square. I very frequently touch pieces without moving them to redress and tidy the board, because the table is often being bumped, the floor shaken, or the board tipped.
