cheating on chess.com

I really don't understand why anyone cares about cheaters. A cheater is only hurting himself...  he will not get better by relying on a program. On the flip side, I don't mind playing against a cheater -- it will only make ME better.

Besides, what does your rating get you anyway? A free cheeseburger at McDonalds? No. Nothing. It's not that big of a deal. (I know, my rating sucks... but even if it were higher, I wouldn't care)

If someone needs the extra ego-boost from a high rating achieved through cheating, then so be it. They are not truly enjoying the game of chess.

I've got a problem with my c.heating at the moment. The oil boiler is an old model and no-one wants to come out and fix it. Why do we bother with c.heating in the first place? Let's all go back to open fires.

Ratings, shmatings....

I am not a number - I am a free man!!

It is very difficult to detect cheaters. The main reason is that there are only select few who can tell when someone is cheating.

real tournaments are great, and if you're opponent tries using a pocket chess computer...you just throw the board, and a hand (not to shake) across the table. Laughing

This a game to be enjoyed by all without regard to race, gender ,age  or level of competentency. Sounds to me you have lost your enjoyment get it back!! I was accused of cheating by one of the masters here once and it wasnt even the best person Ive beaten. I play around 100 people at once because i love this game and even if I knew how to use the so-called engines (im computer iiliterate) I couldnt because Im guessing that takes time then multiply times the people I play. If you want to play against people that move on time do not take vacations please drop me a note and i will include you in the next tourney I run. I have a list and it keeps growing. We just finished a 12 person tourney moving every 3 days in 3 weeks! We just started a 36 person field. Well see how that goes. If more people enjoyed this game we probably wouldnt have all this terrorist crap going on all the time. Happy Holidays if you celebrate them or can enjoy them!

I never have understood why anybody would want to use a chess program during a game.  Now I do use chessmaster for my after game reports, especially if the match was tight so that I can learn where my mistakes were and hopefully become a stronger player, buy why would anybody want to use the program during a game?  What use is it?  You don't win money, you don't get better positions in live tournaments? There truly is no good reason do use a program during the game unless you just can't stand to lose.  But if that is the case then it would be very easy to spot the cheaters because they would have a rediculously low loss rate.

Then again, what do I know.

You'd be surprised how many people would eat a street-burger.  (Apparently enough to fill ten pages....)

Maybe if you were nice to your dog, it would like you.

You should have gotten a.heater; they are better than a c.heater.

You are just cranky because you miss your program.

I'd like to see more honesty and integrity amongst us as chess players....you'll always a few bad apples in the bunch....so what if I'm playing against some clown using data bases or whatever....they only cheat themselves...I challenge myself by finding the right moves and continuations (hopefully) by relying on my ability........let's play chess already......you clowns using computers or whatever are hurting what we aredoing at chess.com...'nuff said!!!!!

I've only run into 1 person who was cheating for certain. Anylize the game and back it up with computer analysis. Then publish it for everyone to see. I put mine on my page but I should have put it in the forums. A little embarrassment goes a long way! I run computers on all my major games once I'm done the game. I use fritz, rybka etc. Any cheater will be caught and exposed. After I posted the game on my page no one else has tried to use a computer. I assume they just won't play me.

I don't use computers, book or databases during the games. I rely on memory and calculation. Even the game against cheater-1 was pure calculation and knowledge. A quick sign of cheating is that the opponent cannot explain the positions in words and must rely on lines of play. They simply can't grasp the balance of forces well enough to make statements about the game that make sense. If you think someone cheated ask them to explain the position in words where you think they cheated.

By that logic, I guess I too am a cheater - for I have absolutely no idea why I make my moves half the time.

Looking back on my games, computer analysis etc, at least 20% of my moves are glaring mistakes.   "Why did you move your queen out to be taken for no material or positional gain"   Yeah, I'm definitely a cheater.

Ah - but if I accidentally make a really good move and can't explain it?  I'm sorry, your logic just doesn't make sense.  Being able to put to english the reasons you made a move is not sufficient to determine cheating - neither should it be an obligation of a player.

After two hours reading this issue i thought lets put something init to!

First of all Cheating means unfair play, if people using programmes to desides there upcoming move while the oppoment does not know that, it is unfair play also ! Myself i do not use all those resourses, my experians is my teacher and i use the tactics trainer to improve.
I do not think i meet cheaters because i have an average rating and will not be intrested for them, they would not gain many rating point from me !

But for the fair higher rated persons it is a disaster to play against a cheater because they stay below the rating they should have (this counts also for others, but the higher rated have more change to meet them)
Personaly i find that cheaters who are caught should be banned from the site. And players who now realise they were cheaters and now contact the staff for a clean sheet, should still be able to play this wonderfull game on chess.com !

I also want to thank the devellopers team for the heavy and hard work they do for us! They came up with the rules and we 'the users' should obey these.

Someone wrote to expand chess.com with a special place for players with the use of chess programmes / computers while they play, that idea i would support. they could have a own rating for there, so they can compare and see the personal progress, with and without those resources.
Ofcourse i do not know if chess.com has the possibilities to do so !

At last i want to wish all good games.

cheating does concern me, but not to the extent that i would leave this brilliant site. i taught myelf chess and even though i have much to learn, i play here to improve my game. if i find that i'm up against a good player, i try to keep an open mind to whether he/she is cheating, whatever the case it makes me think more about the tactics and game plan which can only improve me over time. Also the knowledge that if they are cheating they are only deluding themselves and if faced with a live match face to face they wouldn't know thier arse from they're elbows! because they wouldn't know how to play a the game without a computer chip in they're pocket!.........there will always be good players, not so good players and there will most certainly be cheating players...don't worry to much about it enjoy the game m8.

why are there people asking for this thread to be closed? there's nothing bad going on in this thread. if you feel like the conversation/debate has been exhausted then just stop reading the thread. no reason to close/lock it though i think.

BROKENMAN IS RIGHT! LET THEM CHEAT, AFTERALL IT CAN ONLY MAKE US BETTER. I LOOK AT IT AS TRAINING. IT IS LIKE RIDING YOUR BIKE UP HILL AND AGINST THE WIND, IT MAKES U STRONGER.WHEN U GO RIDE ON FLAT GROUND IT IS EASIER.

U PLAY AGAINST "CHEATERS" WHO MAKE WORLD CLASS MOVES. WHEN U GO FACE TO FACE WITH OTHERS, IT WILL B ANOTHER STORY.

what is so wrong to play in a REAL chess tournament. It is much more enjoyable than playing long games on the web: you have a nice chat after the games with your opponent, even drink a beer, and you meet soooo many interesting people!

Yes, I fully agree with you.

So why are you two still here?

The thing is, I log on here, because I want to play humans of flesh and blood, just like me. If I'd want to play a computer, I could just load my Fritz or Chessmaster.
