Checkmate! But it isn't!

Playing OTB, my opponent announced checkmate! He grabbed his Queen and proceeded to supposedly capture my Knight for the checkmate. However, he dropped it instead infront of my knight slightly touching it when he quickly realized that my bishop on long diagonal is guarding it. I called it out and the arbiter accepted his explanation of accidental touch and did not reconsider the fact he claimed checkmate. I believe I was wronged and should have won.

Do you think ruling was fair?

If he truly, note: truly, accidentally touched your knight, it does not matter if he claimed checkmate or not.

"announced checkmate", were you playing in the under 10's league ?

I sometimes announce checkmate in 46 on move 5

@lagomorph, it's an amateur tournament. Plenty of minors.

@micknj, I never whine....I scream!

His Crystal clear move and obvious intention is to capture my knight when he said checkmate. Clear?

Your phrasing is unclear "dropped it in front slightly tounching it" makes it sound like he really had changed his mind and his fingers just happened to touch the knight while "dropping" the queen.

If instead, he'd, you know, reached his fingers out as if to pick up the knight, then actually touched the knight with those fingers, then yeah, he should have to take the knight.

Anyway, rules like this are usually unfair IMO. Obviously your opponent noticed it was not checkmate. Why would you want to win a game due to a huge blunder? That's not a "fair" game in my way of thinking, I don't care what the rules say.

Don't get me wrong, they are good rules, and I wouldn't complain if they were enforced, but I wouldn't want to win a game like that.
