CHESS: Addicted or Dedicated?

Hello chess Friends

I had an interesting conversation last night with work colleges over dinner last night during a work trip.

Somebody asked me the question,

"Do you think you have a addiction to chess?"

" Why do you think that that?" i replied

" you seem to be always playing and studying chess"

" So, by using the word addiction, are you implying that chess is a negative pastime?"

" Well, it can't be healthy spending all that time on chess."

" What if i was a grand master? Would i be a chess addict or a shining example of what can be achieved with hard work? An inspiration perhaps! "

" well that's different"

So it would seem that you can only become inspirational after you achieve success. until then, we are all just obsessed"

Addiction is a strong word. I'm sure that even magnus wouldn't go crazy if he stopped playing chess. Its just a hobby for most, so we spend our pasttime on it. There's simply nothing wrong about that.

Shows how supportive your friend is, and tells you a lot about how dedicated he or she is towards his or her own ventures, whatever that is.

Chess is life. All I ever want to do, is just play chess. - Bobby Fischer

If you are not learning something new from chess every day, and this goes on for a long time, then it's an addiction and you should rethink things.

ALL THREE of these conditions being true would signify an addiction: Playing games every day because you just have to win, but you haven't learned any new techniques, or you're not getting paid. So if you play games not just to win but to practice what you've learned, it's fine - just don't go full tilt, that's a road to nowhere fast. If you're getting paid, it's fine. If you're learning new techniques, it's fine.

In my experience, if you take it seriously (say, you read a book for example), most non chess players think you are obsessed.

Again, if you are getting paid or learning new techniques everyday, this isn't an issue. Lastly, as a heads up, people are obsessed with Facebook.
