Chess and anxiety

There are 4 types of people. People who feel accomplished by doing things perfect, having control, doing things for fun and having peace. Several of these could be the case, but fear of blundering could be simply because you don't want to screw things up and do things perfectly.

Has anyone felt nervous about initiating a game for the fear of blundering hard? Ive been feeling a sense of dread when initiating a game, sometimes keeping me from playing for several days. Its usually unwarranted, when i play its fine, but just the feeling of starting a game can make me abit nervous. I know its a tad silly, but has anyone else had these hinderances? Just curious. Im sure its a frame of mind and I just need to let go of my worry but sometimes its hard, i must admit.

I think that's pretty common. I don't get nervous at all, but my father is a very nervous person and playing freaks him out. To me it's just a game.

Hi,

I have an Anxiety Disorder and also experience it. It doesn't happen when I'm playing online but when I play like a tournament OTB with a real human being. I was literally sweating and my feet were getting wet on the first day of the tournament. But the next day, it was much better and completely non-existent on the third day.

So yeah, if that happens to you, just keep playing and it will get a lot better.

Remember, practice makes perfect.

My anxiety is towards the end of the game with a winning position. Fear of blundering and end up losing instead.

Thanks for the kind replies. Its good to hear I am not the only one! The chess community continues to show how truly supportive we are of one another. Its a great thing to experience.

Chess is the greatest game there is, But its still a game, Get perspective, Just enjoy it as part of your life, Don't make it your whole life. Take time to watch the wind in the trees and the flowers growing ...............chill

I have an anxiety disorder, which can make it hard to concentrate on the games I'm playing, especially bullet. That's why I should play more Blitz, at least 5 min games

I get really intensely nervous before a match and it takes awhile for me to cool down cause if I don't I basically play a relatively crappy game. I have found meditating or counting to ten sort of helps because it lowers my heart beat which in turns slows me down.

I am rated 1731 USCF, and I have anxiety. Also, I am good at positional play but make tactical BLUNDERS. Is anxiety hurting my chess? What do I do about it?
