Habu (a world class shogi player) taking only a casual interest in chess reached IM levels. Similarly, the same day kasparov formally learned shogi rules he played a 3-dan (very strong), and came ominiously close to beating him. So yes, you can learn chess from shogi and vise versa, although I doubt it's an efficient way to improve. But play what you like, I actually play 4 different board games (Xiangqi, Go, Backgammon, Chess)
Does the game go help.
Can learning and or playing shogi improve someone's chess or are thay totally diffrent.
