Chess as escapism

Playing chess is just a way to escape our daily routine. The same as watching movies, sport or playing cards. We get to participate and fantasize of playing the immortal game, but in the end are there not better things to do?

Sure there are but enjoying life is important too. Remember that when you die your going to be dead for a long time.

For the moment there are no better things to do, no woman wants to be with me, no friends, bad treatment in job, deceased parent, unfinished career, crime in city; life is hard. Let's escape.

These are definitely hard times for you bro, but it'll all pass. You sound like a nice guy. I really hope 2016 brings you alot of over due happiness. Stay strong dude. And I'm really sorry you lost a parent. Things will eventually get better. Have a Merry Christmas and God Bless!

Watching a good movie is in some ways similar to reading a good book. Watching sports is not similar to reading a good book in any way. The choice is obvious: Personality developers vs. Time killers.

I get what you are saying, but the analogy that watching sports is a time killer is a poor comparison.

Interesting question Md. I would be interested to hear about your draw with GM Vasily Smyslov who was world champion 1957-1958.

Now that sound like an intriguing story.

I will come back to chess as escapism later on.....

I enjoy dating women, it's a great way for me to forget about chess. A warm body beats a queen anytime.

Instead of playing chess, you could be riding a hover board. Yep, they just became available today for 20k.

1. Define "escapism."

2. Is it really a bad thing? Why?

3. Couldn't anything you do be escapism, if you're doing it for the purpose of escaping?

Didn't our Moms teach us to be productive, make something out of our lives? How many Doctors, Lawyers and Indian Chiefs play chess?

I thought a few feathers might get ruffled, but aparantly not

Hey md! What wrong wit you? I'm not escaping... chess is a learning endeavor that brings me joy.. or some such?

Anyway, as a few pointed out, after our daily routine some form of escapism is not a bad thing, but in fact may be essential. I have been "escaping" with chess over 40 years, with a few time outs. Who knows, could've been a master with more study but the game is a hobby. I'd rather escape than serious study.
