Nope! It just took 2 years for the topic to catch on, apparently.
Chess as Presented in Code Geass

Well, when Schnizel offers up his king for sacrifice, you guys have to remember that this entire series has taken an alternate course of events. Chess itself could have evolved differently as well, meaning that the goal of the game itself is to capture the king, not just checkmate it alone.
You also have the game with Mao in the first season, the second episode where he comes back and takes Nunnally hostage, you will barely see it but RIGHT after Lelouch loses, you can catch a glimpse of Mao throwing the black king onto the pedistle.
I conclude that chess may have evolved into a capture of the kings due to the fact that when the British Empire changed capitals to the Americas, it represented a lot of political strife and conflict in the noble classes clawing for the chance to be King/Emperor. Charles zi Britannia says it himself in the second season that there was constant battle between his siblings for the throne. With their Social Dawrwinistic approach, the Britannians may have over time altered the way the game is played.
However, the whole "king faceoff" is all symbolism.
Just my two cents. I would LOVE to see a strategy built around using the king as a central attacking peice just like the way Lelouch plays however.

>implying some jimmies have been rustled

yes. the game between schnizel and lelouch. it looked totally bogus. i think it was schnizel who put his kin right in front of lelouch. that's simply the most stupid thing to do. i dont think they were following actual rules.
or it is possible that they were merely trying to analyze each other's strategy and not actually playing a game :p

I remember trying to watch that anime. In the first episode, the protagonist played chess and made some point about moving his king into battle to motiviate the other pieces and I just stopped right there writing the main character off as an idiot.

Do not underestimate the Bongcloud Attack.

I sort-of recall one of the James Bond 007 movies which featured a chess game. The position was actually from one of former world champion Boris Spassky's brilliant attacking games (vs Bronstein)... except that two Pawns had been removed from the board in the movie.
Perhaps the director felt that those two Pawns weren't photogenic?
Here it is (move 14). The d4 and c5 Pawns were removed in the James Bond movie:

Actually if you analyse the position, ... Kh5 followed by ...Ng4 would have been winning moves for black or else ... Kg6 followed by ... Rh8 would also win for black. So Lelouch is not so much of an idiot. I only marvelled that it took him 9 minutes to finish his opponent off.
When Lelouch plays against Scneizel, they put their Kings infront of each other. I'm pretty sure that happened. Can anyone verify that.
yes, it's an illegal move, but it was schneizels way of learning about zero/lelouch his character. he hands him a victory. but lelouch did not take the king and moved back. schneizel replies with that their father would have taken it without hesitation.
in the end battle we see that schneizel was prepaired to leave the battle hoping lelouch would die in the avalon, but even if lelouch survived, schnizel was already prepaired to have more flare's build and challange him again.
lelouch did NOT kill schneizel, instead he put geass on him making him an ally of zero. (lelouch at the time and suzaku later, [suzaku combat / schneizel strategist] to carry on the legend of zero)
i watched code geass 11 times, huge fan ;)
And there I was, thinking for sure that "Code Geass" had to be a typo...
