Play tic-tac-toe, it only has 3 rows.

I'm sorry but this system is far too complex, I gave up trying to understand it halfway through. There must be a simpler way of remembering.

I need a real simple system so I had an idea:

ABCDEFG = A-Big-Crocodile-Does-Eat-Fat-Greasy-Homeless.

1: Bun, 2: Shoe, 3: Pea 4: Door, 5: Apple, 6: Bricks, 7: Heaven, 8: Crate

So C8 could be Crocodile Crate. As everything is a picture combo upside down doesn't matter. You just visualise each row and column with a picture. Idk.

Given the context, I'm having trouble pronouncing "5"

I don't know of any good nouns that rhyme with five. Maybe "hive"?

Yes but in tic-tac-toe orientation of the board does not matter. In chess it does.

a c e g  [1 3 5 7] =  dark squares (odd/odd)

b d f h  [2 4 6 8] =  dark squares (even/even)

--------------------------------------

a c e g  [2 4 6 8] = light squares (odd/even)

b d f h  [1 3 5 7] = light squares (even/odd)

Perhaps you don't need all those squares. Try using just 4 times 4 of them.

Huh ?

You mean, play with this starting position ?

Avatar of FN_Perfect_Idiot

Haha well with driving you can always use an automatic!

If it was up to me I would label each square with a little sticker. As I said this is mainly a problem when I don't have time to think about figuring out which square is which, in live high pressure situations.

Yup. And, remember to add queens as well: Ready to annotate

1.c2xb3#.

It is not as interesting as it seems, in fact. Maybe on 5x5 ?

Like many other things, the best way to improve is to practice. There are excersises out there to help visualize the board. For example name a random square, an then try and figure out what color it is, or name two and figure out if they are on the same diagonal. You will get better with the notation system you continue to play as well. It's more natural to some people than it is to others, but if you keep playing and notate your games, over time it will just get easier. Reading books or looking over games helps too.

I found a free Flash-based 'Coordinates Trainer' on the Internet. It works as a drill, forcing the user to find specific squares quickly.

Note: This is a 100 percent free, virus-free software product. I have no personal affiliation with Chess-Skills.com and I am not making any money by recommending this software to you.

Enjoy!

I just played alot of games, and slowly I began to think: Knight to f5, then queen takes g2 instead of: If I put my knight there, then black can take that pawn with check...

Just keep practising. What I used is: Whenever you make a move, think about what square it moves to. Might take alot of time in the start, but you will improve faster.

After a while, I started to think of them as "horsies" or "that guy over there" instead of the actual piece names. Does this happen to anyone else?
