Hi, I’m starting college in September and as part of my extended project qualification I need to do masses of research and then complete a final essay on any question of my choice... I would like to delve in to a chess related question, however am unsure of what to do it on, the topic must be broad enough for thousands of words worth of research, yet not completely open ended! Any suggested questions would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

What are you reading? (English way of saying "what's your major") Since I think you'll need to start by letting us know... are you looking to analyse chess from a statistical/scientific perspective, or are you looking to approach it from the perspective of the humanities?

Why do you want to write about chess? What is it about chess that makes you think it'll be an interesting topic? That's what my supervisor asked me when I was coming up with my post grad thesis and it helped a lot - simple as it may sound.

What do you think?

Hi, I’m a Brit and I’m in college, taking Physics, Maths and Further Maths along with a qualification called an ‘extended project’. My A levels are fairly mathematical but Exteded Projects allow you to go in to what you want... I’m interested in the Cold War and USSR, so was thinking about researching the political importance of chess
