hehe. You have me blocked ! & I am nearly 50 !! ...Smile

Hence more rubbish.

Not attacking-you. Satirical-response to entrenched-opinion so lighten-up maybe ?

e4nf3

Yes, I have you blocked. Seems to be for valid reasons.

50? You are a kid.

And, when your lad comes of age...I hope that he shows you the same ill breeding that you've shown, not only me, but the entire chess community.

Piss off, as they say out your way.

My parent's raised me not to have a foul-mouth & I will retain that upbringing thanks. (with respect to you.)

I breed pigs on my farm.

Well well I see that we are having lots of fun here  lol. Mr.e4---, the comparison with playing a Piano seemed quite interesting to me. Not only am I rather poor at Chess but I'm just awful in playing the Piano. Now your next question might be to ask me if I own a Piano, no I've never had one. Mind you I do have a Yamaha keyboard that can sound like a Piano and I have read that playing Music is good for the old noggin ( another project that I need to get at ).

Yes, indeed, I can see why you like to hang around with pigs! Arf!!!

Don't you get it yet, son?

You really don't want to mess with us old people.

Sincerely, I just wish that it were possible for you to be here in the room with me...this very moment. Truly, I do.

e4nf3

Hi, cabby...

You know, the piano analogy is a good one. Everyone seems to know that it takes serious effort to be halfway decent at the piano. In fact, every accomplishment in my rather long life took effort. Blood, sweat and tears as Churchill would say.

Not everyone can become a piano maestro...for sure. But, with some serious effort, they can...everyone, I believe...play a respectable Ode to Joy. Even you. lol

Listen e4 you think it's okay to pontificate in these forums yet when meeting opinion that fails to concur with your own turn all aggressive & derogatory ?. That is not the nature of debate so quit being so rude & cowardly.

The world does not owe you a living nor special-treatment.

Another one of my many faults is a lack of patience. Therefore someone will have to go stand in the corner for a while ( and Peace will be restored  lol ).

Yereslov

Go has been claimed to prevent Alzheimer's.

I'm not sure if this is true for chess, but it's very likely to have the same effect.

Chess can only be good for the mind.

Yereslov

You can apply chess tactics to every aspect of your life. It does change the way you think.

ponz111

Sadly, chess and Go do not prevent Alzheimer's but using your mind will slow down the onset of Alzheimer's.

Nine years ago I was diagnosed with Alzheimers and was told in one year I would not have mind capacity and with in two years I would be deceased.

It was a wrong diagnosis obviously.  But it is a terrible disease.

I am at the age where i plan to retire in two years. I am looking forward to having extra time to do things i really love doing, including of course spending extra time here. I have read several articles where chess is mentioned as one of the best ways to fight off many of the mental problems which sometimes come to the elderly. They also mentioned the importance of physical activities as well. Prehaps i will follow DENVERHIGH example and return to bowling which i used to enjoy in my youth (although i would need a healthy handicap to keep up with him). The thing i find most suprising about getting older is that i really don't feel that much different than i did 30 years ago.

It's all well and good if you have great health when you get older, but if you have health problems, life is a whole lot tougher (I'm 66, BTW).

e4nf3

Yes, the health issues become formidable. I don't mind it for myself, but my wife undergoes chemo...as does your, Greg. Every day is precious.

Great thing about chess, at least for me, is that physical coordination and dexterity aren't involved!  My piano-playing has really deteriorated over the years.  But my chess skills have actually improved!!

And you're right, e4, I am just in it for the fun.  I will now confess my secret shame:  I don't ever (and haven't ever) studied chess.Embarassed  No discipline.  No drive.  No intellectual pride.  No surprise there:  after all, I'm a "girl."

(OK, am now hoping to see Big Fight ensue re gender and intellect!  Nah, the subject's probably not that interesting to you guys. Wink )

e4nf3

Yes, that subject has been worked over ad nauseum.

My wife and I play chess (occasionally...she's not a big fan of the game). I spot her a rook. She enjoys the game but, too, has no desire to crack open a book.

My kid brother (he's 55) is coming over in a couple of days. Same thing... I spot him a rook. It's mostly just a social thing with him, too. The cigars and my special home-brewed coffee are the main thing.

The only thing I tried to convey is that chess is as time consuming as learning the piano...if one wants to be fairly good at it. Some people want to put in the time/effort, while some don't. I think that's fine.

"You gotta want it." My old bones have been jumped on for saying that, too. Laughing

That ruffian Scottish pig farmer is sleeping off his hangover... Incoming!!!

Yep, sure worked for Fischer's.

e4nf3

Well, no. What actually happened is that my good friend cabby stole my thread idea. lol

Well, one of the beauties of aging is that you stop noticing things like that.

As somebody once said (and probably earlier on this same thread!):  "When you get old, there are no reruns." Smile

I'm sure you're right, Youngster (DOB: 1982?! --- Are you kidding me?!).

But keep in mind that finding even Slightly different ways of saying the same thing over and over and over again calls for a Lot of Effort and Creativity ..... by cracky!  [I think I've used "by gum" recently.]
