glad you liked it Bob, one of my favorites from mr. fields.  comedy was so different back then, it didn't have to be off color to be funny.  to this day i can still laugh at a 3 stooges skit.

one in particular i think of often while playing chess.  moe was berating curley and his reply was

"i try to think,  but nothing happens."

i'm sure more than one opponent of mine wondered why i was smiling as they were kicking my butt.

Oh yes, The Three Stooges.  I certainly remember that line as well as Nyuk, Nyuk, Nyuk just before Moe bangs Curley's and Larry's heads together.  As I get older, "I'm tryin' to think but nothin' happens" has greater relevance, especially if I don't get eight hours of sleep.

Thanks for all of these new posts.

I have a little item here from Maggie Kuhn that I had to read twice: " The ultimate indignity is to be given a bedpan by a stranger who calls you by your first name ." ( cute the way she put that   lol ).

Yes, the implication is you've reached your second childhood.  Instead, I'm going to be a cantankerous old coot, though I can imagine some posters saying to themselves "going to be?"

The most common of those cheery, patronizing "indignities" is being called "Young Lady(!)"

The two most common cheery phony clichés, when the subject of one's age is mentioned:  "Age is just a number!" & "You're only as old as you feel!"

(Are you kidding me?  That's supposed to make me feel good?  Thanks -- now I'll be able to open this jar with no trouble at all!)

Motherinlaw: I started to feel old back when I was still young  rofl.

---   Found a funny item from George Carlin: " I'm always relieved when someone is delivering a eulogy and I realize I'm listening to it . "

motherinlaw

Nice one... More from Carlin:

  1. One great thing about getting old is that you can get out of all sorts of social obligations just by saying you’re "too tired."
  2. Most of the time people feel okay.  Probably it’s because, at the moment, they’re not actually dying.
  3. So far, this is the oldest I’ve been.
  4. What was the best thing before sliced bread?
  5. (Not about aging -- just an interesting observation)  The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse: You cannot post “Thou shalt not steal,” “Thou shalt not commit adultery,” and “Thou shalt not lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges, and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment.

Motherinlaw: Thanks for the quotes from George Carlin, he was a good guy.

There are times when you can get away with having a senior moment without anyone knowing; however when you are holding a 3 foot long sword in your hand is not one of those times. That is how a woman in Indiana came to stab herself in the foot ( back in 2008 ). Boy am I ever glad that I don't own any swords   lol.

Hadn't heard that story ... but I instantly thought of that totally amazing, brilliant 1970's & '80's "family game" -- "Lawn Darts."

Thanks for the post Motherinlaw. Yes that idea was a disaster in the making. I do remember a place close to where I worked where a lot of older folks were into lawn-bowling ( nearly 40 years ago ).

I found a interesting little item for the golfers out there from Mark Twain: " Golf is a good walk spoiled ."

PoolPlayerToo

“Golf,” said Winston Churchill, “is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.”

fightingbob

Good quote, Steve.  By the way, Steve Mizerak found a better way to putt, just click here. Smile

Thanks for the new posts.   ---   Another Golf related item: " If you are going to throw a club, it is important to throw it ahead of you, down the fairway, so you don't have to waste energy going back to pick it up. " ( from Tommy Bolt ).

PoolPlayerToo

Great commercial, Bob.  It would make for a good memory test for us Oldtimers to ID all the "celebs of the day" that were in that ad.  Made me think of a recent post from badenwurtca.  "First you forget the names, then you forget the faces, then you forget ........."
