That’s your opinion which i respect, but shoving your opinion unwelcome and in such and unruly manner, respectfully, you’re the true trash here.

I like chess because it teaches my to think ahead, and not just in the current time. It’s truly helped me in life.

i play chess because two main reasons it one thing i can still do at my age and condition and two iam totally addicted to it - weather i get better or not -- better is really only relative to chess.com rating which at best is a poor bell curve of sorts - i play cause i can- its free (not like poker which i suck at also but cost what like little i have )and takes time to play other wards i would just waste time and air being here

If you think it’s such a waste of time why would you bother downloading this app and playing enough games to gain access to be able to post? Just so you can’t tell us it’s a waste of time?

Personally I think the OPs comment can be applied to any hobby/sport. The Olympic athletes are the same as grandmasters, training many hours from a young age. So chess is not a waste of time any more than anything else.

Anything that's not bringing you towards God and heaven can be considered a waste of time.

Blasphemy. No such better thing exists.

Well, except perhaps for spending time with loved ones ...

... but even then - play chess with them. tongue.png

I kinda wonder why you are on this site talking about why chess is a waste of time but I also see why it could be a waste of time but many people including myself generally just play chess for fun, I don't play chess much but I do it when I really have time, I can see your point, spending all day playing chess can be somewhat a waste of time but it is up to you, you wont have to play chess all day, it will be up to you what you do for the day.

It's the OP's way of venting his frustration. He was likely upset about his progress (or lack thereof), and this post was his way of lashing out in an attempt to devalue and diminish the game.

Children do the same thing in school all the time - they find something too challenging or difficult, so out of frustration, they call it "stupid" or "a waste of time", but what they're really saying is "I don't like how this is making me feel".

I can see why someone could be frustrated from chess. You could end up making a really bad move and progressing is hard in chess but learning from the mistakes and taking time before making moves can help, if you are in a bullet or blitz I get it, you need to be fast, but when you are gonna be playing a chess game and its gonna be a long game, I would take your time to think, its okay if you end up doing something wrong, we will all end up doing something wrong in a game.

I think about this quite a bit and there are a ton of different angles you can view it on depending on your frame of mind but op has a legitimate point

I belive thay chess should be recommended as a hobby more than a career.

I am fine with wasting my time on something I enjoy.

Dude, chess is great. It’s a hobby and helps develop ur thinking skills, not useless at all!

this might have been worded poorly. what you explain is that improving at chess is not trully possible.. but title says chess is a waste of time.

truth is; chess is a game, and we play games to pass our time to have fun. wasting means losing value, but we play games to make our times more valuable, since we get something in return.

some have played it since they could read and write.

I'm from Vietnam. My grandmother was illiterate. She could only write an "X" for her signature. I know American lady, who's grandmother was also illiterate, and could only write an "X".

Chess led me to Borders bookstore. It had a ton of books. (They went out of business).

Chess led me to Amazon. I was looking for Go books. (They don't sell them in any book stores.)

Chess is linked with literacy since the dawn of literacy. I have the 2nd printed book in English by William Caxton, The Game and Play of Chess.

Yes and no.

Chess is a sport. All sports are the same. You can take the script of the Queen of Katwe and apply it any other sport (they did, Million Dollar Arm) or vice versa,

Some athletes are illiterate, or barely literate.

Only chess requires literacy. Something we cannot take for granted.

Chess is a miracle in that way.

Chess is a martial art. Martial arts are the perfect metaphor for life. I didn't say that. Stallone did. He said "Boxing is the perfect metaphor for life."

It is so perfect that martial artists know chess, because chess is a martial art, a war art.

Chess is the model for martial arts, because chess is a martial art.

I have about 700 books in my apartment, read about ⅓.

Besides making me a literate person, chess is a model to my understanding of everything, example sports. You can do vice versa, a sport can give you an understanding of everything else.
