Is it worth it? That is a completely subjective question that everyone would answer differently.

I like to play chess and really don't like to lose very much. So any time spent actually getting better is worth it for me.

As to memorization, it can be very important in openings but knowing the ideas is even better. Especially since most people aren't going to stay in "book" for very long and you will be on your own sooner than later.

Memorizing concrete endgames and positions is also important. However, there is a whole lot of the game where memorization won't help; where ideas, the ability to analyze and calculate are more important.

if you think chess is a lot of work then, you should probably quit chess. you should have interest in something to progress at it so, your statement just shows a lack of interest. do as you feel, don't make other's force you to play chess.

Sometimes it's work.  But I do it because it's fun and I really like it.

Usually the best thing to do when it starts to seem like too much work is to change your study plan.  Do something different.  Find something more fun to study.  Self-discipline is needed, but chess is a game and it should be enjoyable.

All depends on what you want to get out of the game.

To get good at chess you have to work hard, but it shouldn't be a drudgery like spending a Sunday afternoon entertaining your mother in law.

work a little - then play a little.

don't allow yourself to get caught up in the rating game.

To me, chess is patterns. The idea is to see how beautiful you can construct other patterns from the ones you already know. As was said in the previous post, don't worry about ratings. Unless of course you are a titled player. Other than that, have fun and use your imagination.

Chess is a constant work-in-progess for everyone - from beginner to World Champion.

I would say the worth of chess is comparable to any other endeavour that doesn't result in financial reward. It is intellectually stimulating and it is an enjoyable hobby for many.

Chess can exercise the critical thinking capacities of one's mind. That alone makes it worth it. Of course, you should also have fun doing it. Put those two together and it's an unbeatable combination. But if you're not having fun, then I'd say don't do it.
