Chess is a waste of time that achieves nothing.

Then why are you on a chess site?

---   Well the OP wanted logic and so here we come to a very logical question ( why are you at this site ? ). Have you asked yourself this question and also have you asked yourself why you play Chess at all ( never mind why anyone else plays the game ).

Now don't tell me to stop playing but its the truth. When you reach a rating like 1800 then you thought you have acquired that skill and you are on that level, you realize that it's a bluff, because eventually your rating falls down. There's a psychological effect that affects you negatively. This is how this website is designed. And its addictive but achieves you nothing except the dopamine that you get when you win. This is only useful for titled players who are able to get money. Worst hobby of all time. Yes I post this because I'm butt hurt losing games. I've reached 1852 but now down to 1700-something, Just when you thought you're on a higher level, you're not. Don't attack me Ad hominem, rebut logically.

Cheer up fella! Rating points come and go, but you've already proven that you're a good player. Don't forget that 1700+ rating on chess.com is already on the 97th percentile. Think about it, from all the people who like to play chess online, only 3% are higher rated than you. Of course there are different chess sites, but I think that's a fair assumption. If I were able to get as high rating as you, I would be ecstatic. It's all about perspective, right. :-)

Now when you think about the fact that the people at your level have probably dedicated more than just a while of their lives to this game, it's understandable how winning games and gaining more rating points can get increasingly difficult. So just continue playing, learning and try to not think about rating too much. Remember the perspective. There are always people who are stronger than you (unless you are Magnus Carlsen that is), but there are a lot of people who wouldn't get to your level even with years of immense training.

A tennis player told once that after he got number three in the world he played horribly in the next tournament.

First he didn't understand why.

But then he realised that he got number three by giving everything in every point, staying focus in most part of the match.

After he got number three he thought he reached an important goal and everything would get easier from now on.

He was wrong. He had to go on giving everything in every point.

In chess is the same. You get stronger and had to face stronger opponents. Don't assume that things get easier, they get more difficult. Reaching a certain level doesn't mean much, stay at this level for a while is the new challenge.

Thank you for this.

Yes, we lose, we win and that's the course of the life and even high level players lose their rating over the years (or at least don't increase them). If we see the life, everything is a waste of time just think, why you need to do something if you'll die anyways? That question has an answer? Maybe but the point of the life is doing the things that you like to do, if i enjoy chess i play it, if i enjoy doing something else i do that too and trying to get no regrets.

Yes but it such a pointless activity to put so much effort into.  All that time wasted over the patterns bits of wood make on a board. For 99.9% of people it should be just a fun game and not something that should becomes that serious.

        Chess can ruin lives

I'm surprised no one else has asked this so I'll go. How can bits of wood on  a board ruin lives? People can ruin lives, by what they do or what they say, but how can chess ruin lives?

 CORRECT YOUR GRAMMAR DUDE

What I mean, is that chess has lots of benefits. Read this:  https://www.chess.com/news/view/top-10-health-benefits-of-chess-3208

Of course if you take it too seriously, you may go crazy. Fischer at the end of his days was not very sane.

I have seen people wasting time playing poker, world of warcraft or any other video game... and those games have not so many benefits.

That is the right attitude. It is a hobby for us. It should be fun at any level. If you always think it will be fun once you get to that next level, you're just fooling yourself.

I agree, it it at best a pedagogical tool.

Dougy81

Well chess like any sports is for fun and basically useless but as a training of your body and mind. You want to do something useful –– do maths!

Given that the OP hasn't been around since May, it seems a little pointless reviving this thread: I am now locking it.
